“I saw Luanne by the ice cream place she had a black eye. Is Clive beating her up again? What I wouldn’t give to kick his ass again,” Kip says unaware that I had plans with her tonight and that she blew me off.
“What the hell is going in here? It’s two in the morning,” Says Mr. Newbury coming into the living room with a revolver in his right hand.
Foley and Kip put their hands above their hands and back towards the window. Mr. Newbury nods at Kipley, completely ignores Foley, and goes back to his room.
“Why do your parents hate me?” Foley asks.
“I have no idea, but I find it amusing,” Malachi says.
The four of us share a laugh at Foley’s expense. Laughing with the guys makes me feel better about being kicked around tonight. It’s nice having friends to relax with after a stressful week.
“You two better leave before Mom has a conniption,” Malachi says.
Foley and Kip leave the way they arrived. Mal and I turn in for bed. He turns the lights off again and crawls into the bed beside me. Lying side by side it’s easy to tell how much bigger he is than me.
I don’t remember falling asleep that night. I just remembering being woken up bright and early by Malachi. I felt as though I had just fallen asleep, his snoring kept me up. As I’m being shaken awake, I hear Mrs. Newbury talking to my sisters and then nothing.
“Mom finished your laundry and folded it. I’ve already loaded it into the Jeep. She’s taking your sisters shopping for back to school clothes and she said she will drop them off at your house later today. That gives us plenty of time to pay your bills and help me pack to move in with you,” Malachi says.
I am not sure I want him living with me. It’s nothing against him. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mal he’s my best friend, but as long as my sisters are living with me I can’t have a male housemate. Under any other circumstance I’d welcome him. I think it’d be awesome to live together.
I explain this. He seems to understand. We eat the marvelous breakfast his mom left for us. I get dressed and we start our day. I pay off my utilities, they promise to have them on by noon. I pay my phone bill and the electric bill and get my car fixed and use the rest of the money from the church to buy groceries. Sadly, I only had enough left over for a week’s worth. I buy what I can.
Malachi and I go to lunch, his treat. It’s a new diner that just opened in town. Luanne works there during the day. She’s our waitress. My heart jumps for joy when she approaches the table. I can’t stop smiling no matter how hard I try.
“I’m sorry about last night, Tate. I didn’t mean to blow you off,” She says touching her face. I notice she’s wearing a heavy amount of make up to cover up a bruise. My happiness is replaced by the sudden urge to murder Clive.
“I’ll have the chicken special and a Caesar salad,” Mal says.
“Just a burger and fries for me,” I say. It’s the cheapest thing on the menu.
“He’ll have what I’m having. Also, on his include the soup of the day and add an extra drum stick.”
“Aw, this is cute, it’s like you’re boyfriends,” Luanne says smiling.
“No, it’s not like that at all,” I defend but she doesn’t hear me, “Now she thinks I’m gay. I’m totally in the game now.”
I put my head down on the table feeling like a huge failure. I can’t believe I’m such an idiot. Any chance I may have had is gone.
“Why did you do that?” I ask after five minutes of sulking.
“You’re hungry. You don’t have to buy the cheapest crap on the menu, Tate.”
“Thank you, but I think I’ll be okay,” I say.
We eat our meal in silence. Luanne walks by thirty seven times. Her hips sway when she walks, and her golden pony tail dances in sync with her steps. Seeing her in the cute checkered apron makes me antsy.
Suddenly I feel full, but it has nothing to do with my food. I feel like I’m going to explode. What is this feeling? I lean back in my seat, as Luanne leans over to refill Mal’s coffee I can’t help myself staring down her top.
“Are you busy tonight?” I ask before I can stop myself.
“Why Tate Mills, I’ve never known you to be so impulsive? No, I’m free what did you have in mind?” Luanne asks me seductively.
I flip my hair out of my face, an act that makes her and several other women in the vicinity giggle. I stare directly at her and proceed.
“I got my electricity turned back on today and I was wondering if maybe you wanted to come over to watch a movie or something. I could play some music and we could hang out like we did in high school,” I say.
“I’d really like that. I’ll come over to your house about seven,” She says.
Yes! Wow, she said yes! I can’t believe it. Oh man, I have to get home and clean and shower. There is so much to do before seven. I don’t own any movies. Crap. I’ll have to rent one. I don’t have any money. Shoot!
“What’s up?” Malachi asks me.
“I don’t own any movies and I don’t have any money, you have to help me,” I beg.
“First, you’re going to get your butt kicked again by doing this. Second, I would love to give Clive another pounding so go right ahead. Third, you are some crazy fool, but I love you. Fourth, let’s swing by my place and pick out a movie.”
