Summary: Maybe, Lucas should stop trying.
Notes: This should be the last Lucas/Mara piece for a bit.
Lucas had never intended to develop as much as a friendship with his father’s very precise, hard-boiled Russian assistant, had in fact been scared of her once he had found out that before becoming a glorified secretary had been a spy for the Soviet Union. Lucas knew that in Ahmik Bishop’s world, the title of assistant meant “right hand woman” and had nothing to do with making coffee but why his father needed to go as far as to hire a woman like Mara Ivanov had been a mystery to him all along.
Now, Lucas only forced himself to remember that Mara Ivanov was a former spy and by nationality evil because it made it easier for him to deal with the rejection he constantly had to put up with. She would lead him on sometimes when she was in the mood and Lucas would fall for it every time. She would never sleep with him, not after his father had died on St. Helena three years ago but sometimes he had the impression that he was so close to getting her there.
That was always at exactly the same time as she decided that she had had enough of him and needed to disappear for several months. To Lucas, it was infuriating to realize how much energy and time he had once again wasted wooing a woman who had no apparent interest in him.
However, that wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was that whenever she left, there was this hole inside him that couldn’t be filled and that made him try again the next time he ran into her somewhere. She had accused him of not knowing what he wanted in life many times before but Lucas knew one thing for sure: that he wanted Mara Ivanov.
