Summary: Kaito is the new kid at school and makes really terrible first impressions on pretty much everyone. That's all.

The princess came to school almost every day, and Kaito knew it even if he wasn’t keeping track, because she was incredibly fucking noisy, and she was the only one who didn’t know exactly who he was. It was obvious she was feigning ignorance, but there wasn’t much he could do about it. And honestly, he didn’t care. Between the god-awful mess that was her heritage and the sheer enthusiasm of her addictions, there were more fucked up things running through her veins than thoughts in her brain.

And honestly, she was only good for one thing, though Kaito admittedly had no idea why. When it came down to it, he didn’t approach her on the front steps of the school, where she sat surrounded by at least twenty other students, because he wanted to. He had no choice from the beginning.

“Go away, Kaito,” she said, already bored before he’d even opened his mouth. A few people laughed, a few watched in mild interest. Most didn’t even notice.

“Where is he?”

The princess looked up at him, her head cocked slightly to the side in confusion. Her brief curiosity faded almost instantly, and she turned back to her food. “I seriously don’t understand why you’re still here,” she added after a few mouthfuls.

“Your friend,” Kaito pressed on. “He’s never at school. Where is he?”

Sayuri giggled. “Did it ever occur to you that he might not go here?”

“He was wearing this uniform,” Kaito frowned. “This is the only high school in the district.”

“Well, yeah,” Sayuri admitted. “He does go here. But it’s none of your business.”

Kaito sighed. “You don’t know.”

“I’m a motherfucking princess, of course I know!” Sayuri snapped, placing her lunch carefully at her side before standing where she’d been sitting, three steps above him. They were eye to eye. Suddenly, a lot more people were watching.

Kaito had no qualms about hitting a girl, especially when the girl in question was the bastard princess of Nakatsukuni. He was a second faster than her, but before he made contact he felt a hot rush of pain, like each individual cell in his body was being ripped apart and thrown into salt water. He tasted blood and cement, and the pain was gone. Except where he’d hit the steps - that still hurt. Fucking foxes. He could destroy her - the school, the city - in one glance. It built and raged inside him like a storm - his hands shook violently as he pushed himself up from the cold ground. His whole body shook violently. The world shook violently.

The princess giggled, the infuriating laugh of someone with no idea what they’re up against.

The world became still. Destroying worlds, he’d learned, was more hassle than it was worth. He stood and wiped the blood from his mouth.

“No,” the princess hissed, snatching her lunch from where it sat, unharmed, on the steps. “I don’t fucking know where he is.” And she marched away.

None of it mattered, because that afternoon Kaito heard humming drifting in from the window during class. When he peered out, he saw the stranger, leaning against the wall, smoking and humming. Just a storey below him. He made a shitty excuse and all but ran from the classroom, down the stairs, and around the building, stopping only to catch his breath and wander casually around the corner.

“What’s your name?” Kaito asked. He was almost nervous, which was unfamiliar and uncomfortable. He put his hands in his pockets, and then took them out. They were better in, so he put them back.

The stranger looked up slowly, thoroughly disinterested. “Who are you?” He finally asked.

“Nakah-”

“Oh. Nakahara Kaito. I remember.”

Kaito nodded and tried to think of something to say. “What are you doing here?” He asked. “You haven’t been at school all day, it’s too late to go to class now.”

The stranger gave him a thoughtful look, trying to gauge how unsettled to be by the last comment. Kaito instantly regretted it. He sounded like a stalker.

“I never miss school.”

“You did today.”

The stranger shrugged. “What happened to your face this time?” He asked. His tone made it clear that he’d be just as happy not knowing.

Instinctively, Kaito reached up to touch the fresh cut across his lip. “The princess.”

The stranger snorted, amused. Kaito wasn’t sure why he’d been so compelled to speak to him in the first place. He was just as fucking annoying as the fox he hung out with.

“Whatever,” he grunted, walking away.

“Yamada Ryou,” the stranger told him, finally. Kaito paused.

“I really don’t fucking care.”
