Keeping the Main Page G-Rated

Jul 05, 2010 22:22

Since I've caught this in a few posts lately and I've been asked it as well, I thought I'd make an official post.

I don't think we've ever had any hard rules about exactly what does or does not fly on the main page, but certain things have been discouraged.

In your pieces - behind the cut - anything goes. If you are going to have graphic material, please do use the adult content filters.

You may use graphic icons or language in your comments IF you can be reasonably sure it is not offensive to the poster.

On the main page, please refrain from icons that depict explicit nudity or sexual acts. People kissing, embracing, or engaging in any degree of contact that would be appropriate in public is fine. Non-sexual nudity - ie you've got an icon of the Venus de Milo - is spiffy too. Icons with profanity should also be avoided. If you think your icon is questionable don't go there.

On the main page let's also refrain from profanity. I really don't care if you want to use hell or crap or something relatively innocuous, but can we please stop with the f-bombs in the summaries and cuts? And for goodness sake - if you are giving a piece a particular rating BECAUSE of the language - don't then LIST the offensive words right after the rating! If you really want to include profanity (like it's the most appropriate title you can think of for your piece) you can * or - or otherwise creatively censor yourself (ie f***ing is ok) but keep it to a minimum.

I know most of us are mature enough not to care about a bit of cursing or adult content, but 1. I'd like for us to conduct ourselves with a bit of decorum and 2. we have no age restriction for viewing or joining this community and I would like its main page to remain appropriate for all.

Any questions, feel free to comment.
