This is revisiting a piece I wrote a while ago, which I shall include down here... :D Hence cookie crumbs.

It takes her ten minutes to pick her way out of the school without being noticed, but then she’s hurrying down the steps in the pouring rain, darkness encompassing the city and making the falling droplets shine orange beneath the street lamps, and scuttling along the pavement, book held over her head, ready to go to Lisa’s.

The hand that grabs her from the sidewalk, claps across her mouth and pins her to the wall makes her scream, but then he’s there, right up close, face almost touching hers, whispering, “Shh, shh, be quiet!”

The book falls to the ground at their feet and she opens her eyes and nods at him so he lets go of her mouth and beckons her further down into the alleyway. Men hurry past the opening into the gloomy alley, suits getting drenched but they don’t seem to care, and Alec keeps her pressed against the wall, shrouded by the darkness, carefully hidden from sight.

When the men have passed, Danni looks up at Alec again and he takes a step back, eyeing her, carefully. “Do I... Do I know you?” he asks, cautiously.

“You don’t remember me, do you?” she says, wishing he hadn’t stepped out of her personal space. The world feels so much safer with him right there in front of her.

“Should I?” he says.

She smiles. “I guess I look different now... but I’ve dreamt about you every night for the past ten years.”

“...enlighten me?”

She giggles a little, steps away from the alley wall and looks at him, closely. “You haven’t aged,” she says, softly.

“I don’t...” He looks at her. “You’re...?”

“Danielle Jordan,” she says, quietly. “Ten years ago you... you rescued me in the Sphere. Some men picked me up and they were going to sell me, probably, but you gave me back to my dad...”

Alec blinks hard at her. “Danielle?”

“Danni now,” she says.

“I always...” He smiles. “I always wondered what happened to you.”

“You did?” she says, brightly.

“Yeah...” He grins at her, rubs his neck awkwardly and says, “Wow. You’re... you’re all grown up now.”

She smiles. “Yeah, I am.”

“How old are you?”

“Sixteen.”

“How’s your dad?”

She pauses, looks down at her feet and swallows. “He... he died. Two weeks ago. The bank took our home. All I have is his bike now.”

“Oh... I’m sorry.” Alec steps forward, wraps her up in a hug and she holds herself against him, tightly. His back is wet, like her hair and body, but she doesn’t care as she leans in closer and just sobs against his shoulder.
