Ian came home around six in the morning. This was his usual routine from working a late night job. He rarely had to work during the day. He headed upstairs to the bedroom to see Lilly laying across the strewn about sheets. Her arms were flailed about as if she had just fallen forward to the mattress.

He went over and sat down on the edge of the bed next to her. He noticed she was dead asleep.

Ian thought about waking her up, but could not bring himself to do it. He laid back and put his hands behind his head, looking up at the ceiling. Ian stared up the white coarse dried paint thinking about what he’d have to explain to her when she finally woke up. He decided to get some sleep while he could as he felt he was in for a long talk with no rest later on.

Turns out, Ian was completely wrong. Several hours after Lilly had slept on it, she had decided on everything that had happened. She wasn’t okay with it, but she had to tell Ian how she felt. After all, everything she saw on the news got to her head.

Lilly sat down at the counter in her kitchen with her leftovers in front of her. She happily shoved forked noodles into her mouth waiting for Ian who was upstairs. He was busy making the bed and making sure the sheets were perfectly straight.

She was almost done with her bowl when she saw Ian strutting downstairs. She swallowed and gave him a big grin. She was prepared to have some long discussion with him about everything. Ian was, too, but they were heading in different directions.

“Listen, about last night...” Ian started in. Before he could say more, though, Lilly was ready to jump in with her thoughts that she was too excited about.

“No, I know about everything now. It’s not okay with me that you do this, but you’re like my responsibility.”

“Wait, what?”

“I just think, that since I jumped into your job without really knowing what you did, I was expecting all that. I knew you steal things and what not, even though you don’t really have to now because you have me-”

“I have you? No, you’re my friend. You’re not my mother. You can’t take care of me. I’m not a pet.” Lilly was surprised he was taking it this way.

“I don’t mean that. I mean you can rely on me if you need to. I’m a pretty reliable person, don’t you think?”

“It’s not about that.” Ian shook his head. “I wasn’t ready for you to see everything you saw, but since you did, you’re pretty much involved in it.”

“Which is why you need to rely on me because you didn’t see what I saw on the news! They know something’s up! That girl was really popular - they’re going to find her.” Lilly dropped her fork. Her eyes grew large and she was filled with a different kind of excitement now. The kind of adrenaline that pushed her to argue more.

“I’m aware of that, it is my job, you know! And I’m not worried about that, and you shouldn’t be either.”

Lilly let a ‘huh’ noise and sat back in her chair looking confused.

“My boss has everything taken cared of. There’s some guy that kills women around here and it’s getting pined on him.” She was more confused now, as he said this so nonchalant.

“So why did you shoot her?”

“What makes you think I did?” Ian looked very sly and cunning now. Lilly knew he was hiding something.

“You said I’m in this. Who shot her? Was it that other guy?”

“Okay. I shot her, yes. But that wasn’t the plan. We didn’t know she was home. The place was dead quiet until you showed up.”

“Sorry for blowing your cover.” Lilly put her elbows on the table with her chin in her hands.
“She was going to be there anyway. We woke her up, apparently. Doesn’t matter. Not every job works out. It’s being taken care of - my boss knows the mayor. She’s handled stuff before.”

“So that woman you were talking to was your boss!” Lilly felt like she was solving a mystery now. Ian rolled his eyes. He went to go sit next to her on the other side of the counter.

“Are we okay? Can we move past this or something?” Lilly nodded to him. But he wasn’t done. “I really hate that you’re involved in this now. You didn’t have to be.”

“Well I care too much about you! I had to know what you were doing that was so secretive.” She had her hands on his knees but snatched them back, quickly. “I don’t like secrets.” She looked down to the floor.

“I’m sorry. I guess I thought I’d wait until I got to know you better before I let you in on everything. I don’t really go around announcing what I do for a living. The only reason you know is because you caught me. Twice.” Ian confessed.

He reached over to hug her but she pushed him back.

“No. You can’t live in my house and keep things from me. If you do, I’ll find out.” She wanted to make sure he’d fill in any details she might not know about yet. He nodded to her with a small smile. “You promise?” She grinned in her child like way.

“Yes.” She leaned over to hug him before giving him the last bite of his favorite food.
