Rob's 10 Favorite Concert Photos He's Taken
To make it more interesting (and less focused on U2 as it otherwise would be), I've made it so that there isn't more than one photo for any one artist/band.
10. Trent Reznor & Justin Meldal-Johnsen (of Nine Inch Nails), Philadelphia, August 2008 - The mic stand in front of Justin is a bit of a distraction, but the overall composition, color, and moment make it a favorite of mine.
09. Roger Daltrey & Pete Townshend (of The Who), Philadelphia, October 2008 - This isn't exactly "my kind" of photo, but to be able to capture legends like this doing what made them famous... is something. Wish I could have taken this from a better angle.
08. Glen Hansard (of The Frames), Philadelphia, April 2007 - This was one of those shots that you take on purpose as it's happening. I can remember this exact moment during Santa Maria, thinking "if this one comes out, it's going to be a good one." This one loses a lot when you view it small - it's much harder to make out his expression and smaller details.
07. Josh Ritter, Philadelphia, April 2006 - Though
this is certainly a "better" photo by pretty much all standards, the one I picked is more of a favorite of mine because of the moment it captures. I haven't seen another Josh Ritter photo like it. He's a fun guy, to be sure, but this particular outburst happened for no more than a split second, and I caught it. I wish the photo was a little brighter and easier to make out, but... welcome to concert photography with a point-and-shoot camera, ha.
06. Thomas Dolby, Philadelphia, December 2006 - While
this one has always been my most iconic TD photo, I feel that it's more the product of Photoshop than my camera, so I'm choosing this one instead:
05. Chris Martin (of Coldplay), Philadelphia, July 2008 - Sure, there are things about this shot that could have been better, but this one stands out to me from the set.
04. Marketa Irglova (of The Swell Season), New York City, October 2006 - This is kinda cheating, since The Frames and The Swell Season have become a bit interchangeable, and because this was taken during a Glen Hansard solo show. Still, this is my absolute favorite photo of Marketa.
03. Shirley Manson (of Garbage), Philadelphia, April 2005 - My favorite photo from my first concert photos taken with my current camera. This one I have framed and hanging near my desk.
02. Tim Booth (of James), Asbury Park, September 2008 - He went for a walk on the beach a few hours before showtime. I caught him coming back towards the venue.
01. U2 with Bruce Springsteen, Philadelphia, October 2005 - This is far, far from my best U2 photo in terms of quality, but this is the one that was published in U2: A Diary and was seen on websites for The NME and The Guardian, and for that, it has become my favorite. If I were just going by photo quality, I'd go with either
this one or
this one.
