"If Palin says maverick one more time, I’m going to rip out my hair!" YES. OMG YA'LL. I am honestly considering rewatching it and literally, earnestly tallying how many times she said the word "maverick". Just so's you all who did not see the whole thing or maybe any of it can understand JUST HOW FUCKING RIDICULOUS AND IRRITATING IT GOT. Even Joe Biden couldn't stand it after a while, and called bullshit on it! Talk about real-life Crowning Moments of Awesome! At that point, I cheered with glee and I think I actually blew a kiss at the TV at that point, because yes, IT WAS THAT. GODDAMN. ANNOYING.
I also felt a swell of emotion when Biden talked about his wife and his son that's in the National Guard in Iraq and... he got choked up a little. You could see it, and I swear to God, if it was in any way scripted, the man deserves an Emmy, because it seemed pretty damn genuine to me. Then again, it probably was genuine, given that Palin's out-of-left-feild, longwinded politopoetry rant on middle class families talking around the kitchen table, blah blah, she "understands" what it's like to be a parent, blah blah... HAD to have gotten to him, given his background as a widower taking care of his kids and with one, you know, in IRAQ WHERE HE COULD DIE AND ALL. On the plus side, this little unexpected moment seems to have worked in his favor, at least at that given moment; a glance at the little response moniter thingy down at the bottom of the screen showed that the audience overwhelmingly reacted in sympathy at that point, regardless of gender.
Oh, that's right! Did I mention one of the things that most pissed me off about this debate, which had nothing to do with the actual candidates? You know, the fact that even though the FIRST debate's reaction tracker thingy on the bottom was divided into "Republican, Democrat, independent/undecided", this one was seperated by "men" and "women" amongst the undecided voters in Ohio? As my BF put it: "They're TRYING to make it a battle of the sexes!"
SO FUCKING ANNOYING. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was interesting to see the difference in reaction (men more often stayed closer to neutral while women swung more extremely in responses; females responded more positively to Palin when she was talking about her family than foreign policy, and responded more to Biden when he talked about education, for instance, etc.)... however, it would have been interesting to see that on the first debate, too. And you just KNOW that the only reason they split it by gender rather than party lines this time is because Palin's a woman. If they don't split it by gender on the Tuesday debate, I'm calling bullshit on CNN's part.
Second-Best Quote From Above Link: "Is it a requirement for being a member of the Republican Party, that you can’t pronounce nuclear?" YES. HOLY CRAP, THAT WAS ANNOYING. And I still find it mystifying that she can't properly pronounce "nuclear", "Iraq" and "Iran", but somehow, she can pronounce "Achmedinejad" (sp?) just fine.
