The week before Christmas, a pipe in my ex's house burst. The Urchin, although wounded by a tree limb, watched his dad fix the pipe and learned what to do in the event of another burst pipe.
My ex is still working in Cleveland during the week. His wife (Urchin's step-mom) has a sever injury to her shoulder and has limited mobility. This leaves the 14-yr old responsible for fixing things around the house. My ex and I decided when he was born that we were going to raise the Urchin to be able to do things for himself. We both thought it was important to encourage him to be self-sufficient even at an early age.
Tonight is an example of why we did this. The Urchin called to tell me another pipe burst in the house. He has already turned off the water to that line, turned on a faucet to ensure that no other lines will rupture, crawled into the crawlspace under the house to check the rest of the pipes, packed the leaking area with rags to absorb any water, and called his dad.
His step-sister sat on the couch watching TV (she is also 14).
He will ask his dad to show him how to replace a burst section of pipe when he gets home this weekend so that he will be able to take care of it if this happens again.
I am SOOOOOO proud of my self-reliant son!
