Jam Another Dragon Down The Hole...

Prompted by a lovely Sunday afternoon spent yomping around HERE, I decided to see if I could use the wonders of the net to dig up some info about the area in general, given that my formative years were spent in that neck of the woods...

I don't remember many specific details (we moved to the city when I was 6) but going to THIS PLACE stands out, if only because I went nearly every week with my father; it was only during the eclipse-hysteria of 1999 that I discovered that it's the last place on this island that the Greenwich Meridian passes through (and the eclipse is worthy of a nostalgia ridden entry of it's own at some point - lets just say that as well as concocting our own twist on Operation Mindfuck, we managed to make it onto the local news for our troubles..)..

Finding the picture of the trig point prompted me to see if there was any other "cool" stuff, particularly if there was anything relating to the village where we lived.

Well,

there's THIS PLACE which sounds interesting, although the line about "our WMD exhibit" was a bit worrysome; I also learned that Tolkien spent at least some time in the village and that the area inspired the account of the meeting of Beren and Lúthien (HERE and HERE yes, I know how some of you feel about wikipedia, sorry).

The Inevitable reminiscing followed (for some reason, I remember there being a lot of power cuts, but then again, it was the late 70's/early 80's in the back of beyond), mainly because it was such an amazing place to be as a kid; or at least it seemed that way at the time (having an orchard in the (huge) garden to play in and the coolest "boys-own" cat as my accomplice probably helped).

Anyway, the afternoon itself which prompted this bout of nostalgia and information gathering was lovely; the sun was shining and the company fab as always. I was also pleasantly surprised that after not walking "properly" for years, I felt great after our little jaunt around the dunes.

more soon.. (don't worry, it'll probably be meme-filled ;-))
