"Late at night when I don’t know what to do.."

Jan 14, 2009 19:35

Insomnia and internet connections make strange bedfellows; take the other night, like most people, I've googled my name (and depending on which "form" of my name I'm searching for, the results vary, A LOT) but never thought about googling my internet pseudonym. The initial results are (reassuringly?) predictable - this page and my Myspace profile are the first hits, but after that it gets a little strange..

Why, for example, does a Swedish language version of my Last.fm profile turn up, but not the English language version?

Similiar oddness ensues if you try it with other people's usernames [*] and quite frankly I'm now more inclined than ever to think that the internet does not (as we've been lead to believe)work through a complex combination of protocols, algorithms and what-not but is instead maintained by a group of increasingly bored networking pixies with an odd sense of humour and fondness for Scandinavian languages

Anyway, there is a point to this preamble, namely that googling yourself (and internet acquaintances) can be fun, informative and occasionally highly amusing and we've all done it at some point (probably late at night, drunk, or both). It also gives me a chance to post this (other reasons being: she rocks, Neil Gaiman had a hand in writing it and I was at the gig in question (mercifully, nowhere near being "in shot")- see the entry in question for details, and no, I didn't film it, so don't blame the sound quality on me :-)), Enjoy!:

[*] yes, okay, it works better if your username is a little out of the ordinary, but that's not the point..
