Harry Potter AU where Voldemort had chosen to strike at Neville instead of Harry -- All I've got is this one opening passage slinking about in my head:

Neville was seven when he discovered himself to be a Parselmouth and ten before he understood what that meant.

Ten was also the age when he was first told about his parents (a taboo subject for most of his life) and the extensive Longbottom clan, most of whom wished he would just crawl into some hole and die. Until then, he was under the impression that he and his grandmother had only themselves in all the world, and until he was told about The School at age ten and nine-tenths, had thought it normal for young wizards to be trained by their parents (or grandparents, as the case may be) as apprentices under the cover of darkness, in the grand fictional tradition of the Sithlords.

Now he was almost eleven, and he had a choice.

And points of note:
- Neville chooses to be Slytherin.
- Harry's a ponce and a daddy's boy.
- Neville's on-going rivalries and struggles with Draco (and his cronies) and Harry (and his clique)
- And angst. Neville's grandmother dies, prompting his rage at the world and thus, strength.
- And Draco's jealousy when the Malfoys propose adopting Neville after finding out he's trounced him.
- Which of course catalyses Draco's redemption.
- And all the grown ups trying to force him to be friends with Harry whenever he has to deal with the grownups/OotP because "ooh they're the same age, they must have so much in common"
- And Harry being overly nice to him along with his parents, who're secretly viscerally apologetic about his fate as Voldemort's nemesis
-etc.
