Do clothes (or shoes) make the man?

I recently started taking some post graduate level classes at PSU and in the first two weeks I have to say I am enjoying being back in a learning environment with peers from other schools and sharing ideas it is a great experience.
However, I noticed somethings being the proud gay that I am I of course scoped out the other males in my classes. After seeing that none were really attractive I started to look at what they were wearing. Why? Well I am crazy gay for starters and two this program I am in will eventually (within 18 months) next me a principals certification. Now the principals at my school have always been suit and tie guys and gals. I myself wear a dress shirt and tie 95% of the time, my shoes of choice are Dr. Martens shoes (not boots but shoes) and a chino or khaki of some sort.
Most of my peers in the class wear more dressier garb then I do, nicer shirts, suit separate pants and actual dress shoes, so all in all nicer then me. I am not really looking to leave the classroom where I am overdressed compared to most of my peers any time soon the cert is being done for me. But should I, if I have the interest in becoming management (as it were) start to upgrade my wardrobe now? or at least my shoes? I will be starting my internship this summer for the program and need to plan ahead. Also to go a step further I am one of 2 guys out of 12 who has facial hair most are clean shaven and so has every principal I have ever met
So does what your boss wears affect your opinion of them, or general thoughts on their physical appearance(besides Woof etc...) ? Any memories of sharp dressed teachers or principals and the impressions they left on you?

principal, grad school, clothes, cert
