Atkins

So Atkins Nutritionals US has filed for bankruptcy, not that long after Atkins Nutritionals UK went down the pan.

And so of course the press are having a field day with this, saying that the Atkins diet is finished.

This is absolutely not the case. The Atkins diet strongly promotes the use of fresh ingredients - fresh meat, fruit, vegetables etc. The Atkins Nutitionals companies sold what I would describe as "replacement foods" - low carb pasta, low carb muffins, breakfast bars, cereals etc. In most cases not that low carb, and in all cases very expensive. Is it really any surprise that people didn't buy the products, and hence the company got into financial difficulty?

The collapse of Atkins Nutritionals will have absolutely no effect on my diet. I will continue to eat fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. I still buy some "replacement" products, but from people who sell them for less than Atkins Nutritionals used to. John will miss the chocolate chip breakfast bars, but some friends have recommended an alternative (cheaper) product that we are going to try just as soon as my order from the Low Carb Megastore is delivered today :)

Interestingly I read yesterday that Doctor Atkins had distanced himself from Atkins Nutritionals before he died, and his wife has already sold all their remaining shares in the company. So the Atkins diet is not dead.

Sorry, but I needed to rant about that one!
