Yes, it all of the sudden dropped twenty degrees here while it is miraculously warm and sunny in Boston, and yes it is thunder and lighteninging outside right now... but I went to Capri this weekend! And yes, it is also warm in Philly and free cone day at Ben & Jerry's... but I have gelato, so hah!

So anyway, I went to the south this weekend =) And it's not like going south in the states where you get hicks and scary bible people ;) We left Perugia at 630am for a five hour bus ride, arrived at Pompeii and had two hours for a guided tour, most of which I remember but I was nowhere near fully conscious. It was so bizarre to be walking around there, in this place I've learned and read about, I knew it existed, but I look up and there is Mount Vesuvius and here I am standing in a fully intact room from centuries ago. It fell nicely into the category of surreal, as has much of my experience here, and I'm glad I can say I've been there.

The rest of the day we hung out in Sorrento, or more specifically the pool at the hotel, had a fabulous dinner, and fell asleep before midnight. Saturday we took a ferry to the island of Capri, and then another one for a tour of the island, with a stop at the Blue Grotto. We were dispersed into tiny row boats and taken into the grotto by boisterous Italian men. The opening to the grotto we hardly bigger than the boats so as we approached the entrance we all had to lie down in the boat, with the Italian bending back on top of us and pulling the boat in by a chain strung across the top of the opening. The light is reflected through the water in to the grotto in such a way that it turns the water a translucent blue. The experience was topped off by the fact that our oarmen serenaded us as they rowed us around the tiny grotto.

After the best pizza I've ever had (no joke people, furreal =P) Julie and I explored the town a little, took a cable bus thingy up to the top, and meandered our way to the Arco Naturale... and took a nap on a bench overlooking it =)

Sunday we were bused to Naples along the coastline so that we could see Pompeii and Naples ahead of us and look back on Sorrento as we left. About half way there it started to hail! and we could see the alternating weather clouds and the sunshine over the water and each peninsula. Naples was nice, parts were kind of bleh, parts were very cool, but we were so tired by then that we just walked along the coast some more and took another nap on some monument thingy =P We were back on the bus by the time it started to rain, and home to Perugia by 9.
