My roommate's family was visiting last week from Minnesota, a lovely brady-bunch-esque group. At one point her grandmother asked me if I had done anything to celebrate purim because she had just learned aobut it and was very curious. Then one of her sisters starts telling me about this guy she used to date who was Jewish, I guess trying to prove she knew something about Jews, and the story ended with "but now he's going to hollywood to take over with the rest of the Jews. Did you know the Jews took over hollywood? I never knew how many of them were there, but they're in everything!"
... I just smiled and stared at her blankly, not sure if I should be insulted or just sorry for how ignorant she sounded, and kind of waiting for someone else to chime in, but everyone else just kind of nodded.
Passover begins the last weekend of the program, and my few fellow Jews and I have been talking a lot about what we're going to do, being here in this Catholic carbohydrate capitol. It occurred to us that many of the Jews in this country are Sephardic and that we had no idea what is going to be available... if anything. I mean, they've got to eat something, right?
