Bruce sat at his desk. He glanced at the flashing light on his phone, he had four missed calls and it wasn't because he had missed them, it was because he let them go to voice mail. He didn't feel like talking to Tony right then and he wasn't sure that he would feel like it any time soon. His eyes moved back to the pile of papers on his desk.
Tony had dropped off some files for Bruce to go over but he had failed to tell Bruce that he had once again hacked into some of SHIELD's more top secret files on the Hulk. Bruce didn't even realized what he was reading, it had been mixed in the test result of Pepper's blood that he had told Tony he would look over. To make sure that all of the Extremis was out of her.
“Hey! Banner!”
Bruce almost jumped out of his seat, he hadn't heard Agent Barton enter his office. He quickly moved to cover the paper on of the pile. Clinton was a friend but his was still an agent of SHIELD first and Bruce wasn't sure what he would do if he found Bruce with files that he wasn't suppose to have. “I didn't hear you come in. What can I do for you?”
“Well, actually I'm here 'cause Stark asked me to check on you. You're not answering his calls and I just happened to heading this way.”
“Oh,” Bruce made a show of just realizing that the light on his phone was flashing. “I didn't know that he called, I must have it on silent.”
“Yeah, right. I know when mom and dad is fighting. What did he do this time?” Clinton moved too fast for Bruce to stop him from grabbing the papers. He didn't try to explain as Barton looked through them. “Oh, I see.”
“Is that really how SHIELD sees me?”
Clinton sighed and dropped the file back on the deck, “That's how they use to see you and it wasn't everyone. Fury didn't see you that way, it was him that wanted you on the Avenger.”
“But he did have that 'cage' for me.”
“He didn't want that, he was ordered to get it.”
“Please don't lie to me,” Bruce said.
Clinton shook his head and pointed to the files. “Did you noticed that there's nothing in there about New York? I don't think Tony got you the whole file.”
“So we got the Other Guy to help one time, it was probably just because he got to break stuff and no one blamed it on him afterward.”
“Now see, I have a feeling that's not true and I'm pretty sure that you don't really believe that either.”
Bruce shook his head and went back to his computer.
“Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself.”
Bruce stopped typing and looked at Clinton, “Wow.”
“Yeah, I know,” Clinton rubbed the back of his head. “Natasha can be very deep sometimes.”
“Natasha told you that?”
“Yep, you're not the only one with some bad marks in his file, in fact, you should see Tony's file. Don't ask me where Natasha heard it though, I have no idea.” Clinton turned and headed for the door, “I'll just tell Stark that you're really busy with the research on that Extremis stuff.” He waved over his shoulder as he left the room, “See ya.”
Bruce watched Barton shut the door. He had to admit that Clinton might have a point there, and even though Tony sometimes had an odd way of showing thing, he might have just been trying to help. Bruce sighed and picked up his phone. After listening to the messages that Tony left on the phone, he hit redial and waited for Tony to pick up.
