Justifying the Gift

Today i finally went to the blog of someone i know who's currently in Italy and his latest blog entry disturbs me. There was this section about putting down a list of who he intends to buy presents for when he comes back home. And i wonder why and when do people start practising Gift-Justification? and oh i'm not writing this because my name is not on that list. Even though i did have a share in that scarf and i did originally intend to rush to the airport for the send-off despite knowing only on the date itself. But o well. Nothing's really quite worth it if your good intentions were never really taken to heart.

Anyways.

Alot of times, we find ourselves fretting about having enough souvenirs to bring home for the people we know. And it is at times like this that we suddenly realise the amount of 'friends' we actually have. However we also fail to make the judgement call on whether these people whom we buy for, do actually appreciate what you've bought, and in forward times, return you the favour. The truth is unless you have the money to spend you have the right to be picky about who where your money goes. We all want to be nice. But c'mon. Being nice doesn't justify spending the money on 20 people that you would otherwise have used to buy an air ticket.

(for the holy-minded and the morally-upright, you may be tempted to call me a calculative bitch at times like this but Everybody who doesn't have the privelege of owning their own car and living the life of 2 high-teas a day counts cents. Your evangelising ways won't be able to cover that huge a clientele so give it up won't you?)

Well, of course we buy gifts, but who you buy for are who you apparently want to bother with. Too bad i made a wrong judgement call on that scarf. But hey, we all make mistakes don't we.
