“Come on, tell me! Where are we going?” Uruha pouted. “I’ll tell you later, okay?” Aoi said, grinning widely as the window of the car rolled down. The smell of salt water and sand filled the car.
“Oh, but… eh… fine.” Uruha folded his arms, or at least as much as he could, since the cast was still on his left arm. “Better not be a haunted house or anything creepy of that sort.” Aoi scoffed at the statement. “You don’t trust me, Uru? Fine then, I’ll tell you. We’re driving to the beach.”
Uruha tilted his head back, trying to relax his shoulders. Spending thirty minutes sitting in the same position in a car wasn’t exactly soothing, but he didn’t want to complain. Hadn't Uruha bugged his friends for the whole summer to go to the beach? Though they were all busy doing something else then. “In the middle of November?”
“Yeah” Aoi answered. Uruha nodded and slid down his seat, accidentally pressing the button to let his window roll down. He didn’t mind though; the wind started to blow through his hair and the air brushed gently against his skin.
After a couple of minutes, Uruha felt the car come to a stop as Aoi turned off the engine. “We’re here!” Aoi announced cheerfully, opening his door and stepping out. Uruha sat up again as he tried to find the handle of the car door.
Aoi walked around the car and opened the door for him before he could find the handle, and pulled him swiftly out of the car. “I don’t think any people usually come to this part of the river, so you don’t have to worry about running into people or anything else.”
Uruha smiled and stretched, trying to relax the stiffness of his body. “Thanks. At first I was wondering why you were bringing me to such a crowded place, but never mind that now.” The instant he said that, Uruha started to feel nervous.
He wasn’t back at the comfort of his own house anymore - outside where there are no walls, furniture, or precision. He took a step forward and already he lost sense of which directions were which. Uruha stuffed his hands into his pockets and looked around to see which direction the sunlight came from.
Aoi, sensing his unease, gently linked his arm around Uruha’s. “Hey, don’t worry. I won’t let you get lost around here.” Uruha started to feel safer and calmer again; just like how he did when talking to Ruki. He felt something at the depth of his stomach; was it butterflies? The harder he tried to push the feeling aside, the stronger it returned.
They walked together over the sand, the sun casting light and warmth over their faces. When they stopped, Uruha’s knees gave in and he slumped down to the ground. Aoi let go of Uruha’s arm and . He scooped up a handful of sand and let it fall down between his fingers; the sand was cool, something he wasn’t used to.
“Stay right here, I think I might need a quick dip.” Uruha could hear the playful tone in Aoi’s voice, and he grinned. “Isn’t the water going to be freezing cold?” he asked, lengthening his legs out as he laid back slightly, using his hand for support.
Aoi smirked and took off his shirt, pulling out his phone, keys, and wallet and throwing it onto the shirt. “Well, I need something to wake up myself!” Uruha frowned and dug his fingers deeper into the sand. “You mean you were driving asleep?”
Aoi’s laugh echoed over the beach as he ran towards the water, taking off his shoes and throwing them back in the direction of the rest of his clothes. “Maybe!” A splash of water broke the rhythm of waves splashing upon the beach.
Uruha’s hand brushed across the sand impulsively, listening to the waves crashing upon each other. He relaxed and breathed deeply, meditating unintentionally. Uruha was in a trance-like state, not paying attention to his surroundings.
Out of nowhere, he felt a pair of hands on his shoulders. Before he could scream, his mouth was covered by one of the hands, splashing water on his face. “Shhhh” the person whispered into his ear.
Panic flood through his body as his heart beat uncontrollably. Uruha tried to say something but the sound was muffled and wouldn’t come out clearly, and he tasted the salt from the water on the person’s hand.
Suddenly, Aoi’s voice could be heard as the hands loosened their grip on Uruha, and someone sat down on the sand next to him. “Aoi?” Uruha asked, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand to get rid of the water. A laugh was the only response.
“What the fuck was that?” Uruha muttered. “You looked like you were zoning out so I wanted to see if you could hear me approaching” Aoi said, his laugh finally ceasing. “So is this what you’re going to do if someone randomly comes up and ambushes you?”
Uruha scowled and picked up sand, throwing it next to him where he predicted Aoi was sitting. “That wasn’t fucking funny.” Aoi brushed the sand off of his wet shorts, though some of the sand still stuck there. “What, were you scared or something?”
Even though he knew Aoi was just teasing, Uruha glowered in his direction. Aoi took no notice of it and tried to pick away the sand grains on his shorts. “And now you’ve got sand all over my shorts! Even though the back is probably ruined by now too…” Uruha sneered at him. “That’s your own fault.”
Aoi finally realized that Uruha was in an irritated mood.
“Hey, I was just playing around. Don’t get mad so easily, Uru.”
“Well, next time, DON’T.”
A pause followed, broken only by the roar of the ocean water.
“I didn’t know you would be this annoyed with it… I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, yeah…”
“Are you okay, Uruha?”
Uruha raised his eyebrows as he flicked a grain of sand off his finger.
“Oh yeah, I’m doing completely fine, except I almost had a heart attack.”
“…. I’m sorry…”
“And to think I felt as safe around you as I did around Ruki" Uruha muttered. "I take back that thought.”
Aoi’s head perked up at the mention of Ruki, along with a grimace, although Uruha couldn’t see it.
“So how does Ruki calm you down then?”
Uruha shrugged and laid back, not caring that he was getting sand in his hair or on his shirt.
“I don’t know…”
Was there a cloud in the sky? Something was blocking the light from his eyes.
“Well maybe he distracts you in some way to calm you. With a hug or something?”
A strand of hair got caught on Uruha’s lips as the wind grew stronger.
“I guess… hugs or kisses, whatever that would comfort me at the moment.”
He felt Aoi’s fingertips brush away the hair from his lips, yet still something else tickled his face. He could pick up a familiar scent; a mix of citrus and raspberries, the same flavor of gum that Aoi always chewed.
It was as though a movie reel played inside his head; an image of Aoi leaning over him came into Uruha’s imagination, and he forgot to take in a breath. His face flushed slightly at the low supply of air. Was it possible… to hear someone smile? Because Uruha knew Aoi was smiling, though how, he didn’t know. Maybe the wind whispered it in his ear.
Couple droplets of water trickled down Aoi’s hair and landed on Uruha’s face and neck, sending a slight chill down his back from the icy coldness of the water. Aoi’s face was close to his own now, barely an inch of space, and Uruha reached his hand up hesitantly to find it reach Aoi’s neck.
Finally after what seemed like an eternity, their lips met. Uruha received an intense rush of sensations rapidly; taste of citrus and raspberries mingled with salt from the ocean water, the contrast of cold from Aoi’s lips and warmth from his tongue, the scent of cologne lingering on Aoi’s shirt, and something deep inside his own body, a sensation like burning fire.
He had never experienced a kiss so detailed before; he felt weak from the overwhelming reactions. Aoi placed his hand on Uruha’s cheek delicately, caressing it as if to tell him to forget trying to pay attention to the details. Uruha pulled Aoi down closer to him, his fingers feeling the pulse running through Aoi’s neck, fast and rapid to match his own racing heartbeat.
Uruha’s mind eventually slipped into oblivion; he had no idea how long the kiss lasted, what he heard, what he felt. But instead, he enjoyed the blissful state of abyss. His lips had acquired a mind of their own; he bit softly onto Aoi’s lower lip, his teeth scraping against the unfamiliar metal ring.
Aoi slid his tongue in between Uruha’s lips, entangling them around Uruha’s. A gust of wind blew at Aoi’s hair, covering both their faces in his hair, but he didn’t care. They were both ensnared in their own world now… and Ruki was nowhere near.

The light shined on Uruha’s sleeping face as Aoi drove them through the dark road, illuminated only by the occasional street lights. Night had fallen by the time they made it back into the city. There was no need for stars, since the whole city was glowing even more brightly.
Though it was chilly outside and some of his clothes were still somewhat damp, Aoi rolled down the hood of the convertible. Uruha shifted in his seat and leaned to the side, onto Aoi’s shoulder. He smiled to himself as he looked sideways at Uruha; he must’ve been staring for too long because he had forgotten to pay attention to the road and almost ran into a couple on a motorcycle.
Aoi leaned back in his seat, careful not to wake Uruha as he moved his arm. The road in front of him seemed to stretch out for eternity. Inside, Aoi bitterly wished it did last forever, if only it meant he would have Uruha to himself.
Too soon, he had to take the exit to the left and turn around the familiar corner onto the street of their building. Aoi took his time parking, but he finally turned the key to the off position, turning off the engine. He looked at the time to see it was a quarter to ten. Kai and Reita would get home soon; he had better get Uruha inside.
He unlatched his seatbelt and stepped out of the car, closing the door lightly as he pocketed his keys. Uruha grunted and turned to the other side as Aoi’s arm was pulled away from him. Aoi walked to the other side of the car and opened the door, waiting for Uruha to get out before he chuckled at himself for forgetting that Uruha was still asleep.
“Uru, wake up” he said in a singsong voice as he nudged Uruha. Aoi leaned over Uruha and unfastened his seat belt, trying to wake him up. Uruha muttered something about not wanting to wake up and buried his face into the side of the seat.
“Still sleepy, Uru? Maybe I should carry you upstairs?” Aoi asked jokingly, but to his surprise Uruha nodded as he yawned widely. “Okay then” he said to himself. He placed one of his hands under Uruha’s knees and the other around his lower back and lifted him up gently.
He was much lighter than Aoi had expected. Aoi closed the car door carefully with his leg and turned around to walk to the door. Uruha nuzzled his head into Aoi’s chest, mumbling something that sounded like a thanks. He reached for the doorknob forgetting that it was locked, when he realized it was open.
Wondering why, he pushed the door open and walked inside. Slipping off his shoes, he realized Kai’s and Reita’s were already there. Were they home early today? Aoi walked up the stairs, careful not to brush Uruha’s hair or legs against the walls. As he walked into the living room, Kai looked up at him with a quizzical expression over his book, but said nothing.
Aoi walked up another flight of stairs until he reached the bedrooms. He navigated his way in the dark into Uruha’s room, walking inside and placing the honey blond on his bed. Aoi delicately pulled off Uruha’s jacket, but he had already fallen back into deep sleep.
He smirked to himself as he realized he can’t possibly let Uruha fall asleep clothes covered partially with sand. Aoi took off the rest of Uruha’s clothes carefully as to not wake him up, leaving him only in his boxers. He lifted up the other’s neck and slid a pillow underneath.
Aoi took a step back and studied Uruha’s body, though at the back of his mind he knew he shouldn’t be taking advantage of his friend like that. He pulled the covers over Uruha’s legs and up to his chest, his hand lingering around Uruha’s abdomen for a moment until he pulled it all the way up to the honey blond’s shoulders.
Aoi closed the curtains, sealing the room in darkness, and walked out the door. He closed it behind him, regretting that he didn’t take advantage of the chance to kiss Uruha again. But he needed to get back downstairs anyway, or else Kai might start getting suspicious.
After checking his reflection and fixing his hair in the hallway mirror, Aoi slid down the handle of the staircase into the living room, jumping off and taking a seat next to Kai. “So where did you and Uruha go?” Kai asked, putting his book aside and looking questioningly at Aoi.
“Oh, just to the beach.” Kai stared blankly at his friend. “In the middle of November?” Aoi grinned and slid down his seat, looking up at the ceiling. “Yeah, that’s what Uru asked too. What, a person isn’t allowed to do random things?” He was in a much better mood than he had been all week… until he looked at Kai and saw his face.
“Oh no, what’s wrong Kai? Usually if you have that expression on…” Aoi sat up again and waited for Kai to answer, trying to think of all the possible things that had went wrong. “Aoi… you know Uruha the best out of all of us, right? Tell me, how often does he usually go to the doctor’s?”
Aoi narrowed his eyes, wondering where this was leading to and how he would like the outcome of it. “Um… Uruha doesn’t exactly take good care of himself… I remember I always complained about going to the doctor’s, but don’t remember him saying anything.” Aoi thought carefully, trying to think of the last time he had heard his friend mention a checkup.
“Actually, I can’t remember the last time. Besides after the car accident, maybe four years ago?” Kai grimaced at him and picked up the book to cover his face with it. “Well, we better get him to the hospital tomorrow for a checkup then” he said, sound muffled by the thick novel.
Aoi frowned and lifted the book up to peer at Kai’s face. “Why? What’s wrong? Did the doctor say something?” At that moment, Reita walked in, holding an official looking envelope and a piece of paper. “Actually, he sent it in a letter” Reita said, waving the paper at him.
Snatching the letter out of Reita’s hands, Aoi began to read the words across the paper. His brain wasn’t processing half of the stuff, until one word caught his attention. “L-leu… leukemia?” Aoi stuttered, his hand shaking vaguely.
Kai and Reita both looked at him with repentant faces. Aoi read out in a low voice “After carefully studying the blood sample taken from Takashima-san, we have realized that there was an imbalance of red and white blood cells. We are certain that it is leukemia, though a thorough examination is needed to verify the results. We request that Takashima-san come in for an appointment this week.”
Aoi crumpled the paper in his hand and threw it across the room, where it landed next to the table leg. “You know…” he started out, his voice quivering slightly, “I knew he wouldn’t be the healthiest person alive… but I didn’t expect this.” Aoi buried his head in his arms while Reita sat down next to him and patted his back.
“It’ll be fine” Reita said, though the tone of his voice clearly showed he was worried as well. “Yeah, the doctors could be wrong” Kai said from the other side. But inside, Aoi knew they didn’t believe the words they were saying. Any energy he had inside had drained out in the last couple of minutes, and Aoi knew it. All hope was lost.
