Even if he hadn't been meant to hear it, Lavi couldn't quite shake the concern that Lenalee's unwitting broadcast had stirred in him. The other exorcist was usually the stalwart beacon of optimism in their little misfit band. Of course, it wasn't fair to expect that of her. They all carried a lot on their shoulders, after all. And this place, as strange as it was and as far removed from the world they lived in... of course it would lead to homesickness and that faint sort of wistful yearning for people left behind. And for Lenalee, well, she had family to worry about too.
The red-haired bookman had decided then, to see what he couldn't do about putting a smile back onto the dark-haired girl's face. It seemed only fair, after all; she'd done as much for him when his own sense of well-being had been shaken by this place. An hour, he'd told her an hour. And so he'd made himself rather busy in that time.
Drafting Allen had been a stroke of genius, of course. He had to admit that. The added benefit of the white-haired boy's company wasn't anything to undervalue either. And two pairs of hands were better than one. It wasn't perfect, of course, but it was an approximation. With a little help from his local library, the bookman had rummaged up a book on origami and made use of it, crafting a few dozen little paper lanterns -- in miniature, of course, and hardly fire-safe, but still, more a symbol than anything else -- which he'd strung together and hung across the roof in several intersecting lines. He had the papercuts on most of his fingers to prove his effort. He'd also set out a blanket and set a few places of snacks (one in particular having a bit of a larger portion of said munchies) and tea. Candles ringed the little setup, providing what light they could. And in the sky? The stars had provided themselves as decorations.
Well, it wasn't perfect, Lavi noted as he stood surveying his work. But it would have to do. And just in time, too. The time he'd bought himself was almost up. He cast a glance over to his accomplice. Nothing to do but wait.
