44!

Yesterday was one of the best days of my adult life.  It started super early with my sister picking me up at my apartment.  We went downtown, parked, and got in line for The Stranger's Inauguration party at The Triple Door.

We got in, ordered mimosas, and were seated in the front middle of the venue.  We got breakfast and watched Dan Savage as he posted to Slog.  There was a large screen flanked by American flags on stage and the twinkly lights that I love were red, white, and blue.  The coverage switched between CNN and C-SPAN and shots of Jimmy Carter were met with cheers, while shots of Dick Cheney were met with hisses.

There was some technical difficulty when Rick Warren started is business, and the crowd cracked up.  The picture was restored partway through and we were free of technical woes for the rest of the ceremony.

I first got choked up during the quartet performance of John Williams's music.  I'm a sucker for Simple Gifts and I could listen to Yo-Yo Ma and Itzak Perelman without stopping.

Everyone cheered when Biden took his oath and the mood of the Triple Door was electric during Obama's swearing in.  Right after he finished taking the oath the room erupted in cheers and applause.  I expected to tear up a little, but I didn't expect the tears streaming down my face.  I was crying and couldn't stop.  I'd grabbed a length of toilet paper from the loo, which was super handy.  This dude at the table in front of us was slowly panning his camera over the audience, so my tear-streaked mug may end up on youtube at some point.

The crowd cheered and applauded during Obama's speech and cooed when it looked like Malia told her dad it was "a good speech."

Dan Savage thanked us all for being there and was his usual funny self.  The crowd thinned a bit, but everyone who was left sat down when the Bush family headed to the helicopter.  Calls of "close the door!" rang out after George and Laura got on board and the crowd cheered as the helicopter took off.

I totally walked up the street in front of Paul Constant, who is awesome.

I took most of the day off work (I had to go in for a couple hours to send out a report.  And read Slog coverage of the ceremony) and I kept grinning.  All day long.

America, fuck yeah!
