mar 5 new york city: america is burning
the recent academy awards brokeback fiasco was reminiscent of the shutting out of 'paris is burning' from the competition years ago. the incredibly honest, gritty documentary of poverty-stricken, outcast, black, gay drag queens received wide critical acclaim. it was well ahead of its time but failed to receive even a nomination for best documentary. it later went on to spawn madona's vogue, of course. i didn't think it was homophobia of the academy as much as fear of disconnect with middle america, whose viewership the film industry depends on. after all, this is america - the american dream is not about ideals nor art, but about the individual accumulation of wealth. whaddya expect?
mar 4 new york city: caligula
francesco vezzoli's 'trailer for the remake of caligula' is probably the hottest thing at the whitney biennial. it's tongue-in-cheek funny, with the life imitating art imitating life thing going. but, vezzoli's charmed 'artist to the stars' status (miuccia prada etc) somehow doesn't invite you to take him too seriously. something perhaps more mysteriously beautiful are marilyn minters' photographs.

feb 13 taipei: ice monster
had the most amazing mango, kiwi, strawberry sorbets at this stall in taipei, yongkang jie. to die for. must go back. heard it's going to open in shibuya, tokyo. someone please bring it to nyc/ sin!
feb 8 seoul: seoul sista
so it was it a work trip to seoul and we were in the lounge of the hyatt overlooking the han river having coffee, me and my girl korean colleague. she was someone i grew quite close too, cos we always bitched about the nasty life in jersey. it seemed quite natural that i told her that i was gay. obviously this marketing diva wasn't about to be fazed - i later learnt she worked in lóreal and developed quite an unfallible gaydar. so we ended talking about love and agreed that we would return to asia eventually. it was a conversation i never thought i would have with a colleague. something which i didn't think that i would do anytime soon but did anyway.

another milestone of sorts: raekk came to have reunion dinner with me and my parents. glad it went without much fuss. i think they're beginning to get it after all!
