what imdb says: A young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children. Based on a novel by Richard Yates.

  1. I feel like this is exactly what Jack and Rose would have encountered if they got off the Titanic and started a life together. They were so excited and rushed into this love, barely knowing each other, and it all fell apart. It's devastating in the weirdest way, because I feel like nothing about it was unusually dramatic. These are two people stuck in this life that they never planned for, realizing that the person they married is far from what they thought and that their dreams aren't going to come true. But I suppose the ordinary-ness of the story is what made it so depressing.
  2. The movie reminded me a lot of The Hours, especially Laura Brown's portion with bits of The Bridges of Madison County. April is the unexpected, unfulfilled housewife person who can't find any way out but to die.
  3. Leo and Kate were alright in this movie. I understand that they were supposed to be empty people, but they felt extremely empty. I wanted something more from them.
  4. I'm sort of irritated that I ignored my usually sound judgement to read the book before actually seeing this movie, because I honestly feel that they had to have left stuff out. What was with Frank's dad? I think there needed to be more with the kids. Something was missing.
  5. About halfway through I felt like they were drowning in their sorry life, but that's probably because Thomas Newman's scores always make me feel like I'm watching Finding Nemo.
  6. Michael Shannon was amazing. I'm really please he got a nomination for this, and really pleased that nobody else was nominated. His was the only really outstanding performance.
  7. Even though I whine and complain about Kate Winslet, I'm really glad I finally got around to watching this. Her American accent bugs me though, it freaks me out how good it is.
  8. I want to go live in the fifties. I want every outfit that Kate wore. Where's time travel when you need it?
  9. The movie was gorgeous. Sam Mendes did a really wonderful job. The colors and shots were very fitting to the story, it was like pleasantville. But then the way Frank and April were dark and shadowed was really effective.
