Nothing like an earthquake to keep one on one's toes...
Well, I knew it was inevitable, that an earthquake would strike the area. I mean, come on, it's SoCal, right? But Santa Barbara has seemed amazingly sheltered from all of that. Well, anyway, I'm probably as close as anyone you'll find on your list to being near the
brand-spanking-new 6.5 earthquake, and I'll say, it wasn't a small quake by any means. I'm told it was fairly tame in that it was very much a wavelike motion instead of a sharp motion - which means that it caused quite a bit of rattling around here but didn't really do any damage. I won't go speaking for San Luis Obispo (about 1 1/2 hours' drive north of here), but we're fine. A momentary power outage, about 30 minutes of work standing around doing nothing, no big deal.
The only other time I was in a earthquake, though, it was when an underground natural gas storage cave outside of Houston exploded..that was about a 4, I think. Was kinda strange one school morning to have the windows rattling, though...Houston's not exactly a center for quakes.
I must say though that as the day has worn on, I've gotten a wee bit paranoid. Supposedly there's about a 90% chance of a 5.0 aftershock this week - which I think would be enough that I'd feel it down here. So every little jiggle in my universe is a wee bit magnified at the moment...and Moment, I can already see the image forming in your head, yes, Moment.
At least the first major rainstorm of the year is supposed to hit us here Christmas Day. And as much as that wouldn't be reason to celebrate anywhere else, here in the land of milk and honey, a little dreariness would go a long way to feeling like one isn't living a Barbie-doll SoCal existence. So there.
