As some of you know I have been having troubles at work. This has led to many phonecalls and emails that have finally ended in a face-to-face meeting with my boss. I had a post mortem prepared and I was prepared for a battle.
It wasn't a battle. *phew* It was a discussion, and it went well. *phew*
At the end of the "discussion" we had come to agreement and she wanted to tell me of the upcoming season.
She is doing Wicked, Highschool Musical, Hairspray, and Treasure Island. I was like great! I gues I should get a copy of the script!
"Oh don't bother - I'm just going to edit it and make copies."
-huh thats weird, what do you mean?
"Well, we are changing the name of Hairspray to Hairdo and I'm making new characters and changing the names of the main characters - like in Wicked, now called Trouble, Elphaba is Fabula. See? that way no ones the wiser that we didn't buy copyrights!"
- WHAT?! "But Gina thats no good - aren't you doign this at an Equity House come June? Don't you rent Equity Shocase Theater?!"
"Oh this is how I always do it and theres never any trouble."
Here my spidey sense is tingling and I say I have to call my agent. Since shes making parents pay admission its a "performance" and not a showcase of the kids talents, and shes for profit - duh, its her biz, and shes not doing the other smart thing which is to buy the rights to the musical score and then just fck around with the script. No shes just not giving any money to the owners AT ALL.
SO.
My question, as I'm very confused as to what I should do.... Can I be implicated in this if someone chimes in that this is against equity rules? this is a breach of copy right laws? is it even that? is it because shes a kisd school/ drama camp can she hide behind the kids? Is it nothing I'm making into something?!
HELP!
**I had no problem last season because she was doing Shakespeare - no rights to buy - and in the summer it was a showcase of Narnia with no admission price and no equity house it was a gym in a church... so this hasn't been an issue yet.***
So yeah. I looked over my resume and I passed the preliminary screening to be a flight attendant. Yeah..... My life is strange, but I kinda like that.
