The time has come. Drones owners will soon have to register and mark their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

If you own a drone, you must register it with the Federal Aviation Administration's Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry. A federal law effective December 21, 2015 requires unmanned aircraft registration, and you are subject to civil and criminal penalties if you do not register.

Set to launch on December 21st, the website will let you register a drone for a small $5 fee - a fee that will be waived if you register within the first 30 days of the website going live. The registration will be valid for a three-year period, after which, you will need to re-register your drone.

Once registration is complete, you will be given a Certificate of Aircraft Registration/Proof of Ownership, which includes a unique identification number that must be placed on the registered drone
