Ho boy. A long week at Siggraph. I'm typing this from Logan Airport while I waste two hours until my AirTran flight to leave. Here are my impressions of the last week:
Pros:
- Mind exploded with new information. I've been away from computational fluid simulation since grad school and there are tons of newer techniques that are around. Will have to try them in the future.
- Cool panels and courses. The art of story telling was way cool. There were some great issues that can be applied to GM'ing RPG's.
- Less humidity than in Florida.
- Chance to link up with some old friends and contacts from previous jobs.
- Ran into a schoolmate from high school who happens to be the lead technical director for
Pixar! I got myself an invite to their campus next time I'm in the Bay Area. Woot!
Cons
-AirTran Airlines, specifically in Boston. Their terminal in Logan airport is positively third world. You check in downstairs by the baggage carousels and the departure lounge is crowded and dingy. The only food is a Pizzaria Uno's. Blech!
- Heat! Siggraph caught the heatwave crossing over the nation.
- Programmer funk. I had the misfortune of sitting next to some people during the keynote address who would fit in just fine in GenCon.
- Too much work. In order to take the trip, I had to work on some simulations in the evening, so no hanging out at Boston.
- Lack of family. I miss my wife and daughter.
So that's the long and short of my first business trip for Mickey. It could have been better comfort-wise, but the information is first rate. I give the trip B.
