The loud knock on the door broke the ambience of the peaceful evening and startled all three people inside the house.
They were supposed to be hidden, under the Fidelius Charm. Only those who they told could find them. And no one was venturing out on this blustery, wintry, and snowy February evening.
Remus Lupin stood, drawing his wand, motioning for his seven months pregnant wife and his mother-in-law to stand behind him. Dora, of course, Auror that she was, gave him a look, drew her own wand and stood beside him. Andromeda was right behind her.
“Who goes there?” he called in a menacing tone. “Identify yourself!”
“It is I, Edward Michael Tonks, husband to Andromeda, father to Dora. I was never good at maths, but I don’t think I’m grandfather to your child quite yet, Remus John.”
Andromeda let out a shriek, pushed past Remus and her daughter, and ripped open the door. Dora let out a sigh of relief as her father was revealed. His golden hair was shining in the porch light that Andromeda had lit with a wave of her wand, making it look almost like a halo.
“Ted!” His wife cried, throwing herself at him.
“Daddy!” Dora cried, following after her mother moving as fast as her body would allow.
“Look at you!” Ted sobbed, releasing his wife’s grasp on his neck and placing a hand on his daughter’s protruding stomach. “My baby’s having a baby.” He looked up into his son-in-law’s still wary eyes and said, “My advice to you on your wedding day was to be firm with her, but never let Dora know that.”
Remus relaxed. “Welcome home, Ted,” he said, holding out his hand, grinning as Ted shook it.
“Daddy!” Dora yelped. “How could you!”
“Oh shush, Nymphadora,” said Andromeda, closing the front door and waving her wand at the snow that had drifted in, Vanishing it. “It’s very good advice.”
“Mum!” Dora stomped her foot as she took her father’s heavy blue travelling cloak and hung it up. The three people in the corridor all looked at her, and then began to laugh. “Oh! I hate you all!” She waddled off, sniffling, into the living room, ignoring her husband’s calls to come back.
“Oh…she’s more emotional than you were, Dromeda,” Ted said, his dark eyes twinkling mischievously as they followed after Remus. “Good luck with that, Remus.” Their son-in-law shot them a look over his shoulder and they both laughed.
Dinner was a joyous event. They filled Ted in on what had been happening in the magical world. He, Dirk Cresswell, and the boy he had been hiding with, Dean Thomas, had taken to entering the Muggle world more and more.
Remus started at Dean’s name, and then explained who he was to the two women.
After dinner, they all settled in the living room in front of a roaring fire, talking and taking pictures. Soon, it was time for Remus to go.
“Go?” Ted demanded to know as Remus buttoned up his black travelling cloak. “Go where?”
“For tonight’s broadcast of Potterwatch, Daddy,” Dora told him, handing her husband his gloves.
Ted’s eyes widened, then he laughed. “I missed you the one time that Dean managed to find a broadcast. Hollered my name to hurry, that Professor Lupin, my son-in-law, was on Potterwatch. I was chuffed!" He grinned as Remus’ cheeks reddened. Turning to his daughter, Ted said, "I heard you though that night, young lady...Chameleon. Indeed.”
Dora laughed. “It’s slightly more original than Romulus!” She grunted as Remus kicked her in the ankle. “What…it is!”
Remus shook his head at her. “I’ll be back in and hour and a half,” he told them, leaning down to kiss his wife. “Be careful,” he whispered to her.
“I will and you be careful too!” Dora told him back. “I’m not the one going off to broadcast a revolutionary radio programme.”
“Not tonight at least,” Remus grinned, his blue eyes dancing.
Dora laughed. “Please be safe, darling. And give my love to Kingsley and Lee. We’ll be waiting for you when you get back.”
“Be safe, Remus,” Andromeda told him as he leaned down to kiss her cheek. “I’m so proud of you.”
“Watch over Dora for me,” he whispered into her ear.
“Of course,” he was told.
“Good luck, Remus! I look forward to hearing a broadcast,” Ted said, shaking his hand. “Mum and I will be in the living room,” he told his daughter, steering his wife away, leaving the newlyweds alone.
Dora opened the front door. Remus bent down to kiss her one last time. He then placed a hand on her stomach, crouched down and told the baby, “Behave for Mummy while Daddy’s gone.” Remus smiled when the baby kicked.
“You can smile…he’s not kicking you,” Dora told him crossly as he stood up.
“I love you, Dora.” Hand on her stomach again, he said, “I love you baby.”
She smiled at him. “We love you too, Daddy.”
“See you soon.”
“We’ll leave the porch light on for you, darling, until you get home.”
Remus kissed her hard, then turned around and vanished into the wild winter weather.
