Knowing what we know about Dumbledore that we do now...I wouldn't be surprised that he DID know Remus felt indebted to him. And he took advantage of that.

I think part of Remus DID know that he couldn't push Tonks away so easily. He knew why he was going, even though he didn't want to (and by Christmas HBP you could SO tell he didn't want to be there). He knew she'd fight for him =)
