One step forward, two steps back. Does he? Doesn’t he? The loop is starting to make her head hurt. She’s reminded of fourth through sixth years when Charlie ran so hot and cold, she punched him when he finally asked her out, telling him it was “about time.” Instinct tells her she should take the initiative here, but Sirius has her convinced that Remus needs to set the pace or else he’ll be scared away. She licks the fork in her hand, contemplating Remus Lupin’s mixed signals. Sensing him watching, she looks up.
As she lowers her hand to the table, the look on his face is crystal; it is want. He is watching her hungrily, transfixed; His mouth slightly agape. She meets his eye and their gaze doesn’t waver. She feels naked before him, uncomfortable and exhilarated, and when she notices his tongue lick his bottom lip she shivers, imagining it tasting her. How long can she withstand the scrutiny? Will he give in? Finally, he leans over the table toward her. This is it. Her breath hitches as she continues to stare into his eyes. His hand covers hers and it breaks the spell forcing her to look down. He takes the fork out of her hand, plunges it into the cake she’s been eating and lifts it to his mouth. His eyes close in a moment of pleasure and he moans; A sound which triggers her to clench with longing.
“Sorry,” he finally says “Molly’s chocolate cake is just too good to resist a taste of.”
She is left to her desert as he turns back to his conversation with Sirius. She doesn’t know if she wants to laugh or scream, but her hand is balling into a fist. Sirius catches sight of her and lets out a cackle. That’s it; she stands, picking up the plate with her remaining cake looking from it to Sirius to Remus. Sirius’ laughter stops as he notices her expression. Remus swallows hard, his eyes wide in fear. She walks to Sirius, depositing the cake on his head before leaning over to Remus and planting a kiss square on his lips. Before either can respond, she is out the door, content, savoring the unique taste of chocolate cake and Remus Lupin.
