Summary: Remus and Tonks prepare to meet her parents together.
A/N: I'm not too happy with this so concrit appreciated. Also is rather fluffy so be warned!

Tonks screwed up her face for the umpteenth time; her hair changed from a long,  sleek black to the cropped pink she loved but the frown remained on her face. Remus placed his hands on her shoulders and eyed her in the mirror.

“Relax! It’s only dinner with your parents, you’ve been doing that for years; it’ll be fine.” Remus said, unconvincingly. “Besides if you keep morphing the wind will change and you’ll get stuck betwixt and between.”

Tonks tossed her head and attempted a weak smile.

“Only dinner with my parents! And you’re a fine one to talk about relaxing, currently being about as placid as you would be sharing a room with a Lethifold.”

“True but then it is the first ‘meet the parents’ I’ve experienced, my relationships don’t usually get that far, and well, they’re your parents - I don’t want them to hate me.”

“They won’t … well they shouldn’t and they know I know my own mind. I’d like them to approve though and that’s why we’ve got to make the right impression. So, the hair. Should I go for the pink, which Dad likes and thinks is cheeky? But that might be sending out the wrong signals. Then maybe long and black, which is Mum’s favourite? But that might be too sombre; we don’t want them to think that you’re suppressing me because that would be completely the wrong idea. Oh, I don’t know.”

“Or you could just shave it off?”

“Helpful, really helpful!” Tonks rolled her eyes and gave Remus a playful push before sinking onto the bed.

Remus sat down beside her and wrapped his arms around her. He knew she was worrying this much for him; she knew that this was a huge step for him and she wanted to make it as painless as possible. He loved her, for this and everything else but what he knew and she couldn’t come to terms with was that loving involved pain. Everyday he had been apart from her, every time he had pushed her away, he had been torn apart inside but he knew the cost of loving her had been too great. That was why he’d agreed to readily with going underground. If he cut himself off from everyone who loved him then it was easier to pretend he was unlovable - rather than being hungry for her love, he starved himself of it. Now was different and they both had to accept that.

“Let’s make a pact, no more protection,”

“Hmmm?” She murmured.

“I was just thinking, I want you to stop trying to protect me. I’m not going to run anymore. I can’t, not now. I thought it sounded better if I promised to stop protecting you too.”

“Well, it does. So if we agree will you stay here over the full moon? Will you let me help you? No buts or the deal is off.”

Remus was quiet for a while, unsure on what to think and whether this was an appropriate discussion to have now, when they were cutting it fine for dinner.

“OK, I agree, but I’ll get Moody to be here the first time. Oh, and we have to have some ground rules.”

Tonks planted a kiss on his lips. She wasn’t sure quite what had triggered this but it felt good. It made her feel more confident about her parents. Not that either of them had planned on dropping into the conversation their deeper secrets but this made her feel like someone had wrapped her in a warm blanket.

As they stood on the doorstep of her parents they looked a slightly odd couple, him in his slightly shabby suit and her with her black and pink hair, but they were oblivious, they just knew they were happy.
