Walk on By (Prompt 8) "Three murders in one day - please Kingsley tell me I can take tomorrow off!" Tonks joked as she put the camera, which now seemed to be a permanently attached to her hands, back into her locker.
"Sorry but you're still scheduled to work in the morning. At least you'll get a half day off! Any plans?"
"Nah, Mum and Dad are in Italy until after the New Year. Molly invited me to dinner but I think I'll just stay home and vegetate, maybe go over some of the cold case files to see if there's any correlation to today's murders. So what are your plans?
"Not much - go to work, go home, sleep. See you in the morning. Happy Christmas Tonks!" Kingsley put on his cloak and headed for the door.
"Ah the joys of being single! Happy Christmas!" Tonks laughed as she finished hanging her red Aurors robe on the hook.
Christmas morning Tonks woke early and headed for work where she caught up on the reports that needed to be filed. When she got home she opened the gifts from her parents. She had not even bothered with putting up decorations or a Christmas tree this year. She would be alone this Christmas despite Molly Weasley’s fervent objections. Her Mum had given her a big comfy baby blue bath robe and fuzzy warm bunny slippers while her Dad had given her a beautiful crystal dragon and a large box of chocolate covered cherries. She sat near the fireplace watching the flames flicker as she sipped on a cup of hot apple cider. Her thoughts lost in the memory of the previous Christmas.
Remus had gotten her Mum to let him into Tonks flat to fix her dinner since she had to work and was not able to celebrate with him, Sirius, Harry and the Weasley’s at Grimmauld Place. The night turned out to be a very special. It was the night they both admitted how they truly felt about each other and it was the first time they ever kissed. Tonks fingers gently stroked her lips as the memory of that kiss crossed her mind. The kiss had been so warm, tender and utterly passionate that even the memory of it caused goose bumps to appear along her skin. The months following Christmas were wonderful until that fateful day when they battled at the Department of Mysteries and lost Sirius. From that day on she knew something was wrong in her relationship with Remus. The closer she tried to get to him the further he pulled away. Two days after she was released from St. Mungo’s, they escorted Harry to the Dursley’s. That afternoon he made it perfected clear to her that no matter how much they loved each other that they could never be together. He had told her that he would not subject her to the pain and indignity that a life with him would bring. Shortly after that he was sent away on a mission to infiltrate Greyback’s pack of werewolves. She felt the pain of his words rip through her heart again and all she could think about was the pain that a life without him was causing.

“Thank you Molly for the lovely meal and the sweater.”
“Glad you came, Remus. Please come back soon.”
“Molly … how is she?”
“I’m afraid she’s not doing very well. She not eating or sleeping right and as Harry told you her Patronus changed,” Molly stopped but Remus could tell there was something more she wanted to say.
“And?”
“Oh I shouldn’t be the one to tell you this … Remus she looks dreadful. She works all the time and I haven’t heard her laugh in months. She can't lose anymore weight or she'll just ... Kingsley told me the other day that she’s taking extra risks at work to prove she can still do the job. She’s afraid of getting fired because she can’t morph. She worries constantly about you. Please Remus, if you have a chance, please have a talk with her.”
Remus apparated to the Leaky Cauldron after finishing his good-byes to the Weasley’s and Harry. He made his way up the stairs to his room, it wasn’t much but it was warm and comfortable. Upon entering, he found a small wrapped box and a folded parchment laying the bed. Remus picked up the parchment and a photograph fell out. The image was a picture of him, Tonks and Sirius taken shortly before last Christmas. Sirius held a piece of mistletoe over his cousin’s head. They were all smiling and having a good time, just as the shutter was released both men turned and place a kiss on her cheek. The look of surprise on her face was priceless. It was at that moment, with that simple friendly kiss, that Remus had realized he was in love with the young Auror. Remus never had hope that Tonks could love him back. He vowed instantly, never to tell her of his feelings but that vow was broken about a week later when Tonks let slip, three magical words that Christmas night. As he continued to look at the image, he wondered what kind of hex Sirius would cast on him for hurting his cousin.
On the parchment was a note from Tonks:
Dear Remus,
Hope you’re doing well. I bought this for you before you left but never had a chance to give it to you.
Happy Christmas,
Tonks
PS - I think they can buff out the inscription
Hastily written on the bottom was: PSS - You could at least say Hi.
"Merlin! She did see me!" he thought, picking up the box. Inside he found the beautiful antique gold pocket watch that he had admired while they were window shopping one afternoon at Diagon Alley. On the back of the watch, the inscription read: “To the Marauder of My Heart - Tonks”
Remus lay down on the bed, hoping that sleep would soon take him away from the pain and hunger he felt. Hunger not from lack of food as Molly’s food still filled his stomach, but the hunger felt deep in his soul … the hunger for her.
