Prompt 8. Cleaning, “pounding the pavement”. Yemin
Rating: PG-13 | Genre: AU!Romance | Disclaimer: I don't own them, SME does. Plot is mine. | Summary: He not only drills holes into the Earth, he also drills holes into the heart. One heart in particular.

Warning: UN-BETA'D. Rushed.

The fatigue washed over him, breaking down his every resolve to stay clear-headed as he drove the sinker drill into the Earth - gauging it, opening it, destroying it. When the shaft was finally big enough, he turned the equipment off and stared at his work; perspiration pooling from his forehead.

“You did good,” a voice from behind him says.

Sungmin turns around, facing the man that was approaching him. “Thank you,” he said, leaning down to unplug the drill, cleaning the dirt off his gloves.

The man laughs, pulling a hanker-chief from his pocket and handing it over to his employee. “It seems like the construction won’t take much longer to finish. Don’t you think so, Sungmin-sshi?” He asked, admiring the work.

“Yes,” Sungmin nods, pushing the hanker-chief away politely. “I don’t want to soil your cloth.”

His employer insisted, but Sungmin continued rejecting it. The man sighed. “Really, I think this labor of pounding the pavement spoils you more in the mind than the body. You’re becoming arrogant.”

Sungmin parted his lips to retort, but bit back his words.

“Kim Yesung, founder of the most notorious underwater transportation and trades corporation, and I cannot convince an employee of my own to accept a tinge of kindness from myself.” He sighed. Sungmin only averted his gaze, adjusting his helmet awkwardly. Yesung shook his head, taking a few steps closer and reached towards the boy.

“What are yo-”

Yesung grinned, cleaning away at the sweat before Sungmin could swat his hand away. “Being considerate. A trait you, obviously, have not mastered.”

Sungmin bit his heated cheek, hardening his gaze on the older man. “I’ve mastered nothing but drilling.”

“Then tell me,” Yesung inquired, inching closer, “from whom did you learn the skill to drill into the heart?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir.”

The businessman laughed, stuffing his hanker-chief back into his pocket. “You’ve left a hole in me, Sungmin-sshi. I expect it to be filled by the next time I see you.”

Sungmin watched as Yesung took a deep breath, turning on his heel and walking away, greeting other employees with a kind smile and generous wave as he departed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” He shouted after him.

The entire ground of workers and laborers eyed him oddly. Sungmin retreated into his shell, turning back to his tool. He stared at the large shaft he left in the Earth, furrowing his brows as he considered the ways they would savor this hole and fill it with water.

It demented him.

Moments later, the supervisor jogged up to him, handing him a small note. “It’s from Mr. Kim,” the supervisor shrugged. “I suggest you don’t take it lightly, Mr. Lee.”

Without reading it, Sungmin shoved it into his pocket. He hadn’t remembered to read it until he was in the dressing room, changing back into his casual clothes later that evening.

-

Starting low and working your way up is good, Sungmin-ah, but don’t work too hard. It pains me inside to see you so exhausted. I’ll see you at your parent's dinner gathering tonight. If not water, then please bring me tears; tears of happiness.

We’re to be engaged.
