As for the materials, something lightweight, but still with protective qualities? I have found some pelts from monsters that might do for it.

I can do this. I have some pelts lying around the store that I can use for this. I'll also see if I can make some magic silk like they used at home; it's lightweight and offers better protection than straight-out leather. If I used gemstones for the decorative eyes, I could get some more protective effects....

That would likely be helpful, but I do not have any way to carry them. I probably will not go so far from the town that I would need them, either, since I'm just acquainting myself with the immediate area. [And earning some gil/munny killing the monsters he comes across.]
