OKAY ADVICE 1/2 anonymous March 9 2009, 23:38:17 UTC
I'm sorry this got... so long.

Gah, okay, it's been a bit since I played it but let me try to give you some pointers.

At the beginning of the game, Heather is feeling confusion, fear, and apprehension regarding suddenly being pulled into some crazy nightmare world. Heather is different than other Silent Hill protagonists before her -- she doesn't walk into the nightmare, it comes straight to her, and that's got to be jarring to anybody. While Harry and James both had the idea that once they find Cheryl/Mary and get out of the town everything will be okay, Heather doesn't quite have that luxury -- her only thought is to get to her dad and try to get out, but it's not as simple as leaving Silent Hill.

When she gets home and realizes that Harry is, in fact, dead, the only light of hope she really had to escape the nightmare, Claudia, Douglas, and Vincent is completely extinguished. For a time Heather feels a sort of despair, and is completely lost. I think an important thing to consider is what Harry and Heather's relationship was like, and that will give understanding of exactly how Heather must feel without him. Although Harry does note in a journal somewhere that when he got Heather home he actually considered killing her because of the pain he felt from losing Cheryl and the idea that the child was Alessa and just a reminder of what he'd lost in Silent Hill, this probably doesn't last long. Harry was unyieldingly devoted to Cheryl -- just look at what he went through to get her back even when logic (and Kaufmann) reminded him again and again that she was very likely dead. After a short period of depression, trauma, and uncertainty, I think this feeling transferred to Heather once she started to grow. After all, it's clear that Heather was cared for well -- she's quite attached to Harry and doesn't have any childhood trauma. An infant doesn't survive with a single father unless the father loves the child (...this applies for mothers too, I don't want to sound sexist, haha). On top of being caring, Harry was probably ridiculously overprotective (and why shouldn't he be?), as evidenced by giving her the necklace and the fact that Heather felt the need to call and reassure him just because she was going to be a bit late (I can't imagine she slept in that fast-food joint very long without someone waking her up). Because of this, I think Harry and Heather were probably together a lot, and had a very close relationship with one another. Heather never mentions having friends (that I can remember) or even a boyfriend, saying that she doesn't feel that Harry's suffocating her, or that she needs to escape from an over-protective parent, which shows she has a close relationship with him. In a way, I like to think the two really take care of each other. It's traumatizing enough to lose a family member, but it's even harder to lose someone whom you were that close to. I haven't quite experienced it on that level myself, but I can't even imagine the pain.

I think you might do well to look at The Kübler-Ross Model, which goes over the five stages of grief, because they really do apply for people in mourning. I think what's even harder for Heather is that she doesn't have the time to mourn Harry's death. She's still going to go through these stages but I think she probably goes through denial very quickly and goes right to anger. Heather is angry what happened -- angry at Claudia for involving Harry, and probably angry at herself, because she knows he got pulled into this because of his connection with her. She may feel a bit guilty -- but I wouldn't overdo it on this, because she is quite strong. I think her main thought here is to get revenge on her father's death.
