I don't believe that though.
I bought a shirt at lunchtime, but nearly walked straight out of the shop as Madonna's 'Music' started up just as I walked in. that song makes me cringe. The word "bourgeoisie" had no place in pop. But it got worse. I didn't mind the live version of Like A Virgin, but the next track had a line near the end which said 'We're bored with wrong and right'. Why aren't Madge's lyrics held up to ridicule more often? They are very bad. I try to spot awkward phrases in her songs as a clue to whether she wrote them or not. I don't really care if she wrote them or not, it just gives me minor amusement.
So this kind of brings me to the 3-words-you-hate meme that
charlottecooper said she'd tagged me for. I'll try to keep it short.
I work in a museum that’s part of a big organisation in London, so I get bombarded with creative/museum/visitor attraction/marketing/interpretation bullshit jargon on one side and bigtime business/corporate bullshit jargon on the other. I could never watch The Office as it’s just too much like some parts of my job. To amuse myself in meetings I often write down some of the dumb crap people say, or keep a tally of how many times certain words come up.
The most popular word at the museum this year is: Resonances - nearly always plural - as in “ah - yes the Second World War story has a lot of, uh, resonances with young married couples …’
At a recent meeting ‘resonances’ or ‘resonance’ was used 5 times in the first 5 mins, and another 4 times in the next 10 mins, and one more time at the end of the meeting - 10 uses in all, by 3 different people.
Another word that you’ll be lucky if you never hear: Re-cant, as in “ah - yes, the recant is way behind schedule because of an issue with the, uh, showcase build…”
It's nothing to do with withdrawing testimony in a legal setting, the twisted etymology of this non-word is this: it’s the opposite of decant, of course - which in turn is a recently-coined museum jargon term for emptying your gallery space of objects and putting them into storage. I'm proud to say I was the leader of the 'small objects' documentation team for last year’s decant, and I’ll probably be doing the same job with the re-cant next year.
Acronyms - we got ‘em - HLF, DCF, AMA, IMS, AIM, MLA, CGP, GDP, RAA, SAP, TFL, LMA, NRM, MOL, MODA, SFA, NOF - it goes on and on
In other related news - I got 'Exceeded Target' in my Performance Related Pay round this year - Yay! Divide and Rule!
I mention it not to boast about the extra 0.8% pay increase I'll be getting, but so I can tell you that one of the criteria that I'm supposed to be marked on is DRIVE TO ACHIEVE. Tee hee!
