After a 5 month food fight and a lot of ups and even more downs, I landed the orders I wanted after a day of Hail Mary negotiations ending at 2am. I have been selected to become a Tugmaster, in charge of the operation of my own YTB with the expectation of becoming a Harbor Pilot once I have completed the training. This will keep me in Japan for probably 3 years if not more.
This is a marked step off the beaten path as far as Naval careers go. There are less then 20 tugs operated by the Navy now and 9 Harbor Pilots. For better or worse, I have taken the first step in eschewing the traditional role of a Quartermaster to join a very small community the majority of sailors may have only heard of in passing. No matter how modern or corporate the navy gets, this job remains Seamanship at its core and I am exited to become part of it.

manywaters manywaters will be making provisions to go back to the states to start on a career of her own. While the time apart is not something either one of us relish, I will not ask her to put her aspirations on hold for mine. Everyone needs to forge their own future and we all deserve Adventure. It will be tough but our relationship is made of sterner stuff (read: Awesome) and in the end this will pay dividends when we are reunited and can once again "Form Blazing Sword!". The time line and details for this is all up in the air and I am sure she will be getting a hold of folks once this gets firmed up.
