Loved it for the Arthur/Gwen relationship, for the Arthur/Merlin banter, but mainly because Bradley (and Angel) stole the show, esp Bradley. His comic timing was great and wow so swoon worthy. This is my gift for christmas for all my friends on Camelot_Love this. Hope you like it.

Gwen was walking home after finishing a day’s work at the castle and reflecting on what had happened over the last couple of days. It had all started when Lady Vivian had arrived at Camelot. Gwen’s first impression of her was how rude she was, so spoilt, after all she was her father’s pride and joy and wanted for nothing. But of course Gwen’s role for Vivian’s stay was to be her maid. She had been dreading it but Arthur’s presence relaxed her. Although things between them weren’t back to how they had been before…..well before Hengist had held her hostage and Arthur had come to rescue her, they had become easier recently. Even that moment of laughter they had shared about Lady Vivian after leaving her chambers meant more to her than just a shared moment of laughter. But then came the familiar look, the awkwardness and with that Arthur was off, leaving Gwen alone with her thoughts yet again.
Everything had been run smoothly for the rest of the day and the court jester had kept spirits up during the evening. Even Morgana seemed more relaxed than she had been in weeks. Maybe it was the hustle and bustle of the court, but things seemed calm for once, but as was typical in Camelot the calm wasn’t to remain.
She had been up and out early, so when she came home and saw flowers lying on the table in her house, she was surprised. Gwen was used to being the one who picked the flowers and took them to others, not receiving them. What surprised her even more was the fact that they also had a note with them and to find that they were from Arthur. Never had she expected to receive flowers from Arthur, even if things were improving between them,
The barriers that keep us apart are nothing compared to the power of true love, Arthur.
As she read the note, Gwen felt her heart skip a beat, she was sure she was dreaming and probably would have thought that if it hadn’t have been for all the noise outside. But she was confused, what did this mean for them? Was Arthur having second thoughts on what he had said all those months ago? Were his feelings for her stronger than she actually realised and that was why he had reacted so badly when Lancelot had turned up? Not only that but how did she feel about Arthur? Since that kiss, she had allowed herself to think of him more than she should have done, considering she was a servant and him the crowned Prince, but she couldn’t help it. Arthur had surprised her, he wasn’t the spoilt bully that he had been when Merlin had arrived in Camelot, he had changed. He thought of others rather than himself, he wanted to be judged on his own merit rather than his title and well he didn’t see her as just a servant….now this. Before she had time to dwell on it further, Merlin burst through her door. Bless him, she loved Merlin, he was her best friend other than Morgana and she could talk to him about anything, anything but this. He starting rambling on about rats for some reason,
“Merlin can’t you knock? Rats? What? Rats, big, hairy, sharp teeth, yeah defiantly under here. Are you feeling alright? Me never better, you? I’m having a very surprising day. Really? You know those occasions when you’ve lost all hope and then out of the blue something happens to restore your faith? Sort of. Well that’s what’s happened to me today”.
Then before she knew it, Merlin has left leaving Gwen to her thoughts.
The next time she saw Arthur, he was standing in the courtyard with his favourite horse. Even from the distance Gwen could see that something was troubling him, he was just staring at the floor and stroking the horse. As of late when she walked passed the prince, he would always acknowledge her even if it was just with a look, or that smile of his, but as she walked passed him this time, he remained staring into space. It was then that Gwen decided to talk to him,
“What is it Arthur? You look like you have something on your mind. You read me like a book. I’ve made a fool out of myself that’s all, of everything. I am sure that’s not true. You have a good heart Guinevere but I am afraid it is. I have made a gesture and it was not well received. Are you sure? Pretty sure. Then you are wrong. You are very close to the lady in question. Your token was much appreciated but the situation is delicate and it is not always easy to express what is in ones heart. You think there’s hope. There is always hope.”
While talking to Arthur, Gwen felt those butterflies that she had felt the when Arthur had first kissed her. He clearly thought that she did return his feelings, but she knew that she would never be able to put herself out there and just tell him how she felt. So she dropped the subtle hints that his advances had been welcomed and that they were returned,
“If only I had someway of knowing. Indeed my lord”.
This time it was her who was going to make the first move and while it scared her, it felt right. Maybe things could change.
After placing the note under Arthur’s door, Gwen went home and tried to continue with her daily jobs, but her mind kept wondering to Arthur. She wondered if he had gotten her note, would he actually turn up and what would happen. Ever since her father had died, Gwen felt as if Merlin, Morgana and Gaius were her family, but Arthur well that was different. He was the one person who she always spoke her mind too, she never held back when it came to Arthur, she had learnt that this was the only way to talk to him. She always wondered why she had never been able to hold her tongue around him, but she knew deep down that it was because of her feelings towards him. As night fell, Gwen felt nervous. She had never felt like this before and she just wanted Arthur to get there, so she knew where she stood. But as she waited, Gwen felt her hopes disappear, Arthur didn’t turn up. Maybe he didn’t feel the same for her as she did him, maybe the prat was back and in it was in that time that Gwen felt let down and alone.
The following day, Gwen felt an atmosphere within the Royal Court, but she didn’t know why, it didn’t concern her, so she set about her work. Well that was until Morgana had told her about Arthur being found in the Lady Vivian’s chambers, “Don’t you know, Arthur was found in Lady Vivian’s chambers last night. Why he couldn’t control his feelings I don’t know” Morgana told her. Gwen was shocked, so that was why he didn’t turn up last night she thought to herself, he was in love with Lady Vivian, of course he was, she was pretty and a Princess, she was just a servant. She should have known better, but it didn’t stop her being angry. She thought Arthur was different, but turns out her weren’t, he left her just like Lancelot. Morgana noticed that Gwen was shocked but was too busy looking out the window to notice how this news was affecting her maid and with that Gwen left.
She wasn’t sure if she was more angry because she had to hear about it from Morgana, because Arthur hadn’t told her himself or because yet again she had placed her faith in someone and had been let down. As she came out of Morgana’s chambers she bumped into Arthur and Merlin. Arthur wanting her to wish him luck, but she was too angry and answered him back
‘Oh yes I’ve heard, though sadly not from you lips. I wish you could have been more honest with my Arthur’.
What Gwen didn’t notice was Merlin’s reaction to this; she just walked away and went home.
Once she was home she did nothing but think and it was driving her mad, that was until Merlin came barging through the door. “Rats again” she said, not really wanting to talk, but Merlin was persistent.
“No, I need you help, Arthur needs your help. I do not think Arthur needs me. Gwen don’t worry I know. You know what? I know everything. Anyone who spends five minutes with you can see how you feel about each other. Look I do not have a lot of time to explain, so you are gonna have to trust me. Arthur does love you. No he doesn’t. If you don’t trust me, then trust your feelings. I’m never trusting my feelings again. HE’S ENCHANTED” Merlin said, that was it something inside of her snapped. “
“YES WITH LADY VIVIAN I CAN SEE THAT. No I mean literally enchanted, with magic, potions, love juice, none of his feelings are genuine. How can you be sure? When I saw him his feelings seemed real enough”.
As Merlin stood there in front of her, Gwen was trying to make sense of what he had just said…he had basically told her that Arthur not only had feelings for her but he was in love with her. She wasn’t sure how to respond to this. Yes she had feelings for Arthur and the news about him being found in Lady Vivian’s chambers had hurt her more than she had ever been hurt before, but what did Merlin expect her to do. She couldn’t just go walking up to Arthur and admit how she felt or could she??? Merlin could see that he would have to leave Gwen to her thoughts, so said “Gwen none of his feelings for Vivian are real, but if you do not break the spell his death will be. Search your heart, you know who he loves.” and with that he left. It was as Merlin left, Gwen knew that he was right and decided to open up her heart so as to rescue Arthur.
She bumped into Gauis as she arrived at Arthur’s tent. No words were exchanged but the look on his face told her he was worried about Arthur. As she entered the tent she found Arthur standing at the far end getting dressed.
Gwen thought for a moment, it was now or never, making her way over towards Arthur, “then let me make amends” and with that she pushed him backwards and kissed him. At first as she kissed him she could tell that she wasn’t kissing Arthur, it wasn’t the same as their kiss all those months ago. But after a while, she felt the kiss change, she wasn’t just kissing Arthur, he was kissing her back. As the kiss became more passionate, he wrapped his arms around her and dipped her, which just made her want to kiss him even more. They were both breathing heavily and they were both reluctant to stop. Although as they did, Gwen saw Arthur look at her, like he hadn’t in so long, no longer was it a look of awkwardness, but a look that told each other how they truly felt. It lasted for a split second and then came a look of pain on Arthur’s face, something was happening, “What am I doing?” said Arthur. Merlin had been right the spell had been broken and Arthur had no idea what was going on. “You’re in a fight….to the death” Gwen started to explain, as Arthur continued to look at her confused “… you’re losing. There’s no time to explain. Just…live for me Arthur. That’s all I ask right now”. And with that the horns for the finale round of the fight sounded.
Sitting in the stand, Gwen was feeling nervous. She felt sick to her stomach and she hadn’t felt like this since she had watched Arthur joust while injured, when Merlin had told her he was jousting against the assassin Myror. She took her seat and watched as Arthur spoke to Merlin, who knew what they were talking about but it looked serious. As Arthur took his place in the fighting area ready to go into battle, she couldn’t help but look over at him. The battle began and Arthur was on the back foot, then in a split second he looked over at her and it was as if he remembered what she had said and who he was fighting for. As he advanced she could see Arthur was winning, until he had the king on the ground pinned under the blade of his sword. Gwen knew he would never kill the King, it wasn’t in his nature. Arthur had withdrawn his blade and declared that fighting was no way to achieve peace, causing a round of applause from the crowd. Gwen had never felt prouder as he looked over at her.
As she returned home and walked through the door, she was greeted by a red rose on the table with a note, but before she had a chance to read the note, a voice spoke “I thought I’d better deliver it myself this time”, although she didn’t need to turn around to know who the voice belonged to it, it was Arthur. Standing there before her, all she wanted to do was tell him how proud she was of him, how much she loved him and that she would wait for him, but she knew she couldn’t.
“I’m sorry for what I put you through. No you have nothing to apologise for. I too have caused my share of hurt. You must believe that my feelings for… Vivian were not real. I’ve never loved another. One day you will. One day you will find your real Princess. One day you will be King of Camelot and I can not be your Queen. You don’t know that. I am as sure of that as you are. Things may change. Well until they do, my lord”.
Even now after a few days, his words had stayed in her head ‘I never loved another’, ‘Maybe things will change’. She had never expected these words from Arthur, even after that kiss. Hearing him say this meant so much to her, but it was all a dream, her and Arthur could never be and while Gwen could dream as much as she wanted, she was also realistic. She just hoped that although it would be difficult they could remain friends and then maybe, just maybe….well only time would tell. As she reached her front door, Gwen was relieved she was so exhausted both mentally and physically, the last few days had really taken a lot out of her, she just wanted to curl up and relax with one of her most prized possessions, a book that her father had brought her.
As she walked though the door though, she saw something on the table. Walking over to the table she saw a parcel, a note and a red rose. Instantly she knew who it was from, she didn’t need a note to tell her, it was from Arthur. She opened and read the note,
To Guinevere,
I saw this and thought of you.
I hope you will enjoy it.
Always
Arthur
Gwen sighed as she read the note, again Arthur surprised her. She put the note next to the rose and picked up the parcel opening it carefully. As she took the wrapping off, she could see that Arthur had left her a book, which made her smile. He remembered how much she loved her books. It was only then that Gwen looked at the title, Cinderella and as she opened the book up she saw another note written inside the book,
G,
While not all dreams come true, the ones that count do.
Read this and believe there is hope, one day we will both get what we dream about, but until remember what I said.
A
As Gwen went to settle down with her new book, she remembered what Arthur had said, she would never forget those words and the way in which he had said them. But the book and the two notes strengthened those words further and with that she began reading about the servant who one day met her Prince and married him.
