two expandable pants up!

forget about being a food critic (something i would so consider doing if there was no such thing as meat), i think i should be a movie reviewer. i took a film class in university. i am dating a guy with a degree in film. surely i have the credentials to write about movies, no? and my catch phrase will be a play on ebert's and roeper's. not two thumbs up, but two expandable pants up! or two chai lattes up? or two packages (hot!) up! ha. packages up. that sounds dirty.

let me begin:

little miss sunshine is a delightful romp through american life via a modern family's determination to get their little girl to her beauty pageant.

ok, that didn't feel natural to write at all.

but little miss sunshine is a very good movie. even though it has some big names in it (steve carell and greg kinnear being the most popular), it is definitely "indie". it just has that "indie" feel to it. why do i keep writing "indie" in quotation marks? but you can just tell when a movie is indie by the quirky dialogue, the off-kilter shots (like when the main object in the frame is situated to the right or left and not to the centre), and the uncommon subject matter. it is also typified by the inclusion of eccentric characters, such as a homosexual scholar of proust who tries committing suicide. or, say, a 15 year old devotee of neitzsche who wants to become a jet fighter pilot. of course, the main character of this ensemble comedy, the little miss sunshine of the title, is olive, a very likeable 7 year old who keeps her family together with her innocence, truthfulness, and undying determination to enter the little miss sunshine beauty pageant. all of the characters are great, really they are, but they are almost too "indie", if that makes any sense at all. sometimes the quirkiness feels contrived, but since the movie is so good, and the story and characters captivated me, i am just going to let that little fact slide. there is one particular scene towards the end that had me laughing hysterically, but also crying too. and not tears from laughing so hard, but tears cried by the painful sweetness of it all. my emotions were really put through the ringer with this one. and that? is a sign of a great movie. my verdict: two packages (hot!) up.

WAY up!

(dirty).
