Kale was exhausted. He'd been traveling as fast as he could without getting caught, and once he left human territory, he'd barely stopped. He couldn't quite believe it - a neutral city, a real one, not a crumbling relic held together by academic bickering and apathy like Mage City had been, even before the invasion.
Jhelbor - and the one person he wanted to see most was there. Trinity, he wished he could have brought his book to show her, the clean final copy with the small dedication at the front, but that didn't matter. He'd do it all again, if he had too.
Of course, she might be somewhere else entirely.
Even so, Kale raised his hand and knocked on the purple door.
Cho looked up at the sound of the knock. Tails, more than likely. That would be nice. She had bread to get rid of, and he had to be the sunniest person type thing in the whole city. Especially with Bret being so gloomy lately. Not that she could blame him. Still, Tails was always positive. He missed Sonic - she could tell, but it didn't stop him being a little sun spot. "It's open," she called, marking down that adding honey as an emulsifier did nothing for colour removal. She should probably take a break and try something else for a while or she was going to look like she'd got hit in the mouth with a paint balloon.
Oh, saints and shrines, after a hurricane, two battles, and who knows what all else, he hadn't actually expected her to still be in the same house. He's happy, of course, but also kind of stunned, and a lot nervous. It hadn't just been the city that all those things happened to since the last time he saw her, after all.
But she's here, he actually made it, and he thinks he can smell fresh bread, so he pushes the door open and steps gingerly inside.
Her hand stopped moving over the page, a spot of ink bleeding from the tip of her pen and covering half of the word 'taste' while she just stared at it. Not Tails. She wasn't sure if she wanted to be relieved or surprised or upset, so her brain decided on all three at once. "Hello." She set the pen down and closed the journal with exaggerated slowness. "It's been a while." She didn't turn to look at him until she was sure she could handle it, and when she did she was surprised to see the state of him. "You look awful." So much for subtlety.

"Hi, Cho."

"Yeah. I was kind of in prison."
That was possibly the worst thing to start with. Was it the sleep deprivation or Cho that was making him stupid? Both, he decided.
