Wednesday evening (anyone can tag, Bret isn't paying attention XP)weedyshyguyOctober 15 2009, 15:35:29 UTC
As they walk, Bret is doing his best to keep Cho company but eventually they run out of ideas for twenty questions and fall into a companionable silence. Bret can't help but fill it with snatches of the melody that has started forming in his head. It's sort of repetitive and he only has a few words to go with it. By the third day it occurs to him how annoying this must be.
Apologizing, he decides he'll try to get whatever passes for alone time in a caravan and starts drifting through the crowd, doing his best not to stay near any one person for too long for fear of irritating them.
He isn't really paying much attention to his route and probably passes the same people again and again without realizing as he weaves back and forth through the crowd.
Tails glanced at Bret as he passed by...again. He didn't actually know him, but he'd seen the man spending time with Cho and figured he must be a friend of hers. Figuring it couldn't hurt anything, the fox reached ut and lightly tapped Bret before he was out of arm's length. "Excuse me."
"Well, uh. Not really." Bret shrugged. "I'm writing a song. I've been humming it so I didn't want to bother anyone." He'd been bothering enough people lately. It was a good thing he was keeping his mind occupied or he'd just dwell on how he kept screwing up.
Ah, there, doing it again. Stop it. "You're Tails, right?"
"Bret." He might've been staring. Alright, he was definitely staring. "If you...if you don't mind me asking, um, what are you?" Am I trying to make people hate me now? What kind of person asks that?
Tails could have minded the question less, but he'd pretty much figured out that he was different from foxes these people knew...but then he was different from foxes back home too. "I'm just a two-tailed fox," he said simply.
"...okay." Bret wasn't sure what to do with that. "Um. You're friends with Sonic, right?" Sonic who claimed to be a hedgehog. A giant blue hedgehog. I think I'm a little speciesist. But just a little. I'd still sell them fruit.
"Yis. We're friends." And he was so grateful for that. He was down two friends- even possibly making enemies- and he needed Cho around. And with how she the demons' disappearance was affecting her, she might even need him around. It was a nice thought, even if he was certain that his constant humming would drive anyone crazy after a certain point. But at least with Cho, he knew that she wouldn't turn around and hate him suddenly.
Or at least he hoped so. He'd thought that was the case with Cordy and Cherry and he'd apparently been wrong.
"Not a lot, I just made a few things while we were stuck at the oasis," Tails said offhandedly. Tinkering was nothing new for him. He was actually pretty pleased with what he'd made, but was too modest to boast. "For now there's nothing to do but walk though." And roast.
"Yeh. I'm glad I have this song going. Gives me something to focus on, at least." He'd probably go crazy from stress and grief and fear if he didn't have a distraction.
He wondered if that's what music did for him back home as well.
Tails nodded. He was actually passing the time thinking on things that he probably couldn't answer...like how many worlds were out there and how many versions of the same world were there.
"Just some simple things like rope and fishing poles," the fox replied. "Little stuff since I don't have tools." He hoped those tools Cho gave him were alright.
Bret nodded. "When I'm not playing music, I like to weave. Haven't really had a chance to since I got here." He appreciated the fact that he managed to magic up a bunch of clothes but there really was nothing like creating your own. It was similar to how writing music made him feel, just with pants instead.
The fishing poles raised an interesting question. "I wonder if we'll ever see an ocean in Rowan. That might be cool." There's probably no surfing, though. This place sucks.
"What all can you weave?" Tails asked curiously. At the comment about seeing the ocean, he chuckled. "I know at least one person who could live without the ocean."

"Oh." Bret looked down, giving a hesitant smile. It's the fox...thing. "Hello."

"Um, so. What've you been up to lately?"
