This Monday afternoon begins like any other; the day is a fairly warm one, even for summer. The city is quiet. There's the usual Elf posted as a sentry on the wall, and the breeze occasionally stirs from the darkened forest.
In midafternoon, however, a fire starts about a quarter-mile diastant, to the south of the city. At first it's too small to see - though Lottie and Cris can both sense it immediately - but then it starts to spread, linearly, to the East and West. After about a minute, the entire city is ringed with fire. A closed circle, still one quarter-mile distant.
By fifteen minutes after it's lit, anyone in the city can smell smoke from the distantly burning trees. There is no noticeable movement in the forest or the road around the city. The fire does not come any closer.
If approached, the wall of fire is an inferno - so hot that getting close is enough to burn you. It's impossible to see through.
Congratulations, inhabitants of Jhelbor. You're trapped.
