As siin as the fire was going well, Daxter had a seat nearby so tat he could feel the warmth. The bonfire was a little like a reminder of home, and he lazily tapped his fingers on the ground as one ear flicked up and down. Reluctant as he was to admit it, he missed Sandover and Sentinel Beach. Not much he could do about it though. So instead he turned his attention to the other people there.

He didn't really know any of the other worldwalkers or anything and he was a little reluctant to since he didn't have a great track record with people, but he liked to be around others. So for the time being he was content to sit and enjoy the bonfire.

Sam was sort of drifting through the crowd. His attention was caught by the small -- Elf? Maybe. The ears seemed... off.

In any case, the fire could be dangerous. The kid probably shouldn't be sitting so close.

It seemed like a fairly trivial thing to worry about, given all the sorts of things that could happen in Rowan -- or anywhere, really -- but the worry nagged at the back of Sam's mind. That, and there was something oddly familiar about the boy.

Sam meandered some more until he was nearer to the fire, then took a seat himself close to the boy, but still out of arms' reach. He looked over with a brief nod of greeting.

Daxter glanced over at Sam, hiding his surprise at being noticed behind a lopsided grin that did nothing to hide his overbite. Leaning back on his hands, he tilted his head a little. "Hi," he said simply, not quite able to come up with anything else yet.

"Evening." Something about this entire situation was familiar, in fact. Suddenly, Sam remembered the fireside chat he'd shared with -- Leslie, hadn't that been her name? -- in the oasis. Whatever happened to her?

It didn't help that any memories from the oasis were suspect. Just as likely he'd imagined the whole thing.

"Nice night," he remarked.

"Yeah it is," Daxter agreed. "Great night for a bonfire anyway." He rolled his eyes up to the night sky. It was really too bad the stars didn't move here.Drawing one knee up, he rested his arm on it and cocked his head to the side. "So what brings you to my little spot by the fire?" he asked curiously.

That's when it hit him -- just when he wasn't looking, just for a second when he was looking away and just listening to the voice.

Sam turned, his brow furrowed in uncertainty. But he was either right, or the kid was going to think he was off his rocker, in which case he really lost nothing.

"...Daxter?"

Daxter's long ears flicked upwards and gave Sam a bewildered sideways look. "How'd you know who I am?" he asked, certain that he'd never actually seen or spoken to him before. Sam definitely wasn't from back home though, judging by the short ears so Daxter had no idea how he'd known.

"I'm Sam." Sam, meanwhile, was now looking bemused in Daxter's direction. Given the way Daxter had acted before, Sam had expected someone older. It hadn't occurred to him until just now that this Daxter could have come from a time long before he got turned into an ottsel. "Sam Lowry. We, um. We talked a bit through the journals a while back. About how there used to be another of you."

Daxter had to think on that for a moment. He wasn't always the best at recalling conversations with people, just ones he overheard. "Oh yeah, I remember. We were supposed to meet up sometime. But things went all crazy, so I guess it wasn't possible."

What Daxter couldn't figure out was how Sam knew him though, since this was their first meeting. But then again it wasn't really a big deal to him either. "So'd you ever find that other Daxter guy?" he asked.

"No." Sam shook his head. "But... you sound like him. And you were looking for Jak awhile ago, weren't you?"

That was interesting. "Yeah, I sort of found him. Not really what I expected though." He rana hand through his flaming hair before looking at Same again. "So I really sound like this other Daxter huh?"

"Yeah." Sam pulled his knees up to his chest, rested his head sideways on them.

"Like I said, we, uh. We fought together. When the city was being taken." Then Daxter had vanished. Then Guy had left. And now he might have them both back, albeit in different forms. The thought came upon him suddenly, but it wasn't unwelcome, and Sam smiled a little.

"Well it sucks he vanished on you, but it sounds like you've got sometihng nice to remember him by." Damn, Daxter was a little jealous. He did have Jak of course, but they were always together and nobody else would ever miss him. Squashing that thought though, he relaxed and stared into the fire. "So, what's he like anyway?"
