Once his plans (well, there were sort of plans) for the bonfire had started to take shape, Bret had written Jack to ask about getting firewood. Jack had obliged and, in addition, sent some men over to help. Bret had wondered, briefly, if this was intended as a euphemism. But after one failed attempt at lifting a log (and the subsequent ruffling of hair he had received) he realized it probably had more to do with his upper-arm strength.
Oh well, he didn't really mind. He was fine supervising and playing songs to encourage everyone. It was almost like being on the radio that played at a construction site.
With all the helping hands (God why did his mind keep going there? Was it because Cherry had made that "making out" suggestion? He really needed to stop that) it wasn't long before the pit was dug and the pile was ready to be lit. Cris was on stand-by, as Ariana had yet to arrive and Bret assumed she'd want to see it start.
Maybe, if she saw the big fire from start to finish, it'd tide her over for a while and, despite what Grace had said, nobody would get set on fire.
Although making her associate the fire with a fun party might be a bad idea. They'd just have to wait and see.
And there she was. Bret smiled and waved at Ariana as she approached. "Hey, we're just about to light it!"
