Above the ground, in the center of the city of Jhelbor, in a room that John has long since vacated, a twisted piece of shimmering metal and glass seems to shrink down down down until it's nothing more than a pinprick, and then the air around it explodes, and the ripples of that much magic being unmade travel out in all directions.
It's too much. Too much power to be harnessed. Too much magic to just be unmade. The Gods have miscalculated, and they don't seem to care. Hidden under the ground, where the thrums of discord make the very essence of their being ache, they listen to the world above and hold their realm safe.
Time shifts.
Something deeper stirs. A dead, gnarled branch on the Rowan tree shivers and three green leaves unfurl on a tender new shoot. Barely a foot away, an entire branch curls in and dies. Things are not right. The very fabric of Rowan is being pulled too hard, and it's going to break. The tree responds, pushing against the disturbance, the disquiet. Not enough. Too long sleeping, too far reaching. There was power, once upon a time. Power enough to mend the whole world. Not any more. But when the tree was new, when the ties were strong. Not enough power to stop it now, but enough power then, and as the ripples press harder the lines become less and less clear.
It's there. The power. Enough to put things right.
Time shifts, and the air unexplodes.
Lines of Magic, powerful and blinding to the eyes of those with the sight beyond sight stretch across the city, over its inhabitants. Like flies in spider's silk, some are caught, trailing the power after them, and when the world snaps back into shape, they snap out.
If traveling to the oasis was uncomfortable, this journey is maddening. The entire world seems to unmake and remake itself each instant. The landing is rough and several things should become apparent almost immediately. The Rowan Tree is alive, the land around it is pristine fields to the Southeast and forest to the Northwest. A forest that looks beautiful and inviting and nothing like the forest you left behind. The city of Jhelbor is gone.
