[Heading back up to his room like he is, it's hard not to hear the sound from the hallway. Freezing in his tracks, Merlin looks around, finally realising with some alarm that it had come from his room. Suddenly filled with worry for either of his roommates, Merlin yanks the door open, eyes wide.]

What happened??!

[restardom]

[ Rise's not far behind, wide-eyed and instantly alert. She hadn't quite expected that amount of noise, and she's in such a rush to see what's going on that she collides with Merlin's back. ]

What is it?? What's wrong?!

[conflictedrebel]

[sdjlagsdhjlf oh shit, not really expecting that he yelps out a string of curse words as he takes a step back. Frowning even more he looks away from the two and stares at the door. Trying not to lose his composer he exhales and looks at the damage he did to the door, fuck. Hopefully Souji won't get mad at that...]

She... she's gone.

[Merlin stumbles a bit himself, but manages to right himself and Rise before they both fall over. Oof.]

"She"...? [His gaze catches on the dent Kanji had left in the door.] Kanji, what--?

[restardom]

[ she--

Rise looks momentarily confused, before realization dawns. Her eyes widen, and then she touches Merlin's arm as she slips past him and moves in front of Kanji. This reaction... and that sinking feeling, there's no other explanation. And it hurts, she can't deny that, but right now, it's got to be ten times worse for him.

So after she stands there for a few seconds, she suddenly closes the distance between them in a hug. ]

Oh, Kanji...

[conflictedrebel]

[he just stands still for a second before wrapping his arms around Rise. On the verge of tears he looks up. His voice cracks slightly as he speaks.]

Was--was it something I did?

[Rise's reaction--and Kanji's question--finally helps things click into place. For a second, Merlin can only feel an overwhelming wave of sympathy for his roommate. Then, he gathers his wits about him and steps over to the pair, placing a hand on Kanji's arm.]

No, Kanji. Don't ever think that. I bet Naoto didn't want to leave. You know this place can take people away without warning. [His eyes dart briefly to Saber's bed before he looks back at his friend.] It's a risk we all took.

[restardom]

It's not your fault, stupid.

[ this is muttered into his shirt, fiercely. She's in absolute agreement with Merlin on this one, and if Kanji continues to think it, she's going to have words. ]

[conflictedrebel]

[sighing miserably he runs a free hand through his hair.] I know she would never want to leave!! But-- I might have messed something up. See, when... when one of Hayate's friends left I got to thinkin' that I should try to spend as much time as possible with everyone I meet here 'cause I probably won't remember if I ever leave. And one thing lead to another and I ended up leaving her a voicemail sayin' how we should hang out more and junk. [he pauses.] And... and in it I ended up saying that I loved her. I don't know how this whole romance shit works, but-- that... I dunno, that must have done it. God dammit I just--

[he screws his eyes shut and adds quietly:] We... We were even gonna celebrate our-- our... when we... [at this point he's trembling and he can't even bring himself to say anniversary so he'll just end his sentence there.]

...Kanji. [And here comes Merlin, pulling them all together into one big group hug.]

Whatever you told her, I don't think that's what got her sent home. [He bites his lip, trying to make his voice stop shaking.] She would have been happy to hear it. Don't think her disappearing is a result of anything you said.

[restardom]

[ she'd ordinarily joke about this hugging arrangement, but she's far too worried about her best friend right now to even think about teasing. It's that thought that has her working her arms free to reach up and cup Kanji's face in her hands, eyes bright and voice stern. ]

That's right-- you gave Naoto something important to feel happy about, so there's no way this is your fault! Don't you dare think that way!

[conflictedrebel]

[he clenches his jaw some and sniffles] Yeah-- but... I just-- it just feels that way. Like, things were going perfectly and I just messed it up. That's what it feels like.

You didn't. [He doesn't let up on his grip, hoping his and Rise's closeness can give Kanji some comfort.]

I might not know Naoto as well as you do, but I think anyone would be happy to hear that someone so important to them loves them. It just...isn't fair that she didn't get to tell you the same.

[ Rise doesn't move her hands, either; she seems to have the same idea. ]

I definitely know Naoto, and what you did wouldn't have messed it up at all. There's not a girl out there who wouldn't be the happiest if they were told that they were loved that much! If you don't believe anything else, at least believe that!

Love is an amazing, wonderful thing. And even better when you show it like you have. [No, he doesn't particularly care that he's spouting sap thing would likely get him a good teasing from Arthur.] I'm sure Naoto knew that, too.

[After all, it had already been a month, and they'd been planning something for the future. Merlin has a hard time believing Naoto would have left willingly.]
