Hi everyone!
Well, here I am in Cooperstown for my dramaturgy internship at Glimmerglass Opera. Actually, seven miles from Cooperstown where I get sucky cell service and the nearest Wal-Mart is 30 minutes away! Welcome to the country, I guess. This is about as "roughing it" as I get.
The first week has been amazing. We had training on Monday, which had much to do with safety regulations regarding the members of the production team that would not be spending the majority of their time in an air-conditioned booth. But it's great that the company is so concerned with safety. Apparently they're one of the first companies in North America to implement safety precautions BEFORE someone died. So that's comforting.
As I mentioned earlier, my primary responsibilities lay in an air-conditioned lighting booth. I am responsible for the Glimmerglass 2007 blog at Glimmerglass2007.blogspot.com . However, this also means I get to attend all rehearsals, featuring internationally acclaimed directors, conductors, and singers, and any other important events that I can report on for the blog. Yesterday, I got to attend a masterclass with Steve Blier, a Grammy-winning faculty member at Juilliard.
Cooperstown is great; I don't plan to go to the Hall of Fame Museum, because I'm not that into sports, but it's a cute town with lots of shops and restaurants. The opera is about 7 miles away, so it's a bit of a drive, but worth it to get away for a while. The hours are pretty long and weekend hours are a must with the show schedule. I live in a house with 11 other people (it's a big house), and I room with the other intern in my department, so it can be hard to get away from work. Even in town, I tend to run into Glimmerglass people-it's a small, small town.
Lots of fun is in store for the next few weeks. This weekend I'll probably be going to visit my brother Ben and his wife Jen in Vermont and hopefully sometime soon, I'll be visiting New York City to reunite with my Vienna friends from last summer. And of course, productions begin on July 7 th!
Hope everyone's doing well! I appreciate your e-mails!
