Another argument against publishing original slash emphasises the importance of intertextuality. For a number of slash fans intertextuality is a basic requirement. They like their slash stories and characters embedded within ( Read more... )

So, two years after joining fanfiction-fandom because of the attractive perspective to be able to write and post freely, because I felt restricted by the official publishers, I’m in the situation that my stories are banned in the net in Germany, but accepted by publishing houses. That is so weird ( ... )

Thanks for your thoughts on this, govi - and yes, you're right, FOTR is the best by far for me, too :). Hope we'll go on having a bit of an adventure together in fandom as well as 'outside'.
Btw., are all the interpretation together in that one challenge-post? I downloaded these, but just want to be sure there are no additional interpretations I missed. :)

Canon versus fanon--that was precisely the issue I ran into when I branched out and started slashing in the J-Rock fandom. I really think some people take the whole canon thing way too seriously and over-analyze every single thing, which of course takes all the enjoyment out of both the reading and the writing of fan-fiction as a whole. I will admit that I do color my VigBean slash stories with just enough details to make them a little more full and because they can be descriptive tags, but not to the extent--as you wrote--of knowing EVERYTHING about Sean and Viggo. When I read a VigBean story, I don't want something that sounds like some entertainment rag or gossip column, I want a story. My only HUGE codicil has always been to not overly-feminize either man, and bless 'em all, but VigBean writers have always understood men far better than any other fandom I've read so far. I have gotten very into yaoi manga, but I really hate those books in which the uke or submissive partner looks like an underage pretty boy and acts worse ( ... )

He, you warrior-woman :) - should've known you're into epic-style-battles!
Like you, I love yaoi manga, but not the fixed roles - though the yaoi manga boys with their stylish androgynous looks are at least aesthetically sometimes nice to look at.
I'll write an email to you these days!

*waves at you*

just wanted to let you know i'm reading...even if we won't fully agree here :)

[that being said, I think OC slash totally can and should be published. but part of it being OC is that it loses its intertextuality and must stand on its own...something that I think your approach to RPS invites and makes much easier...when you do care about (however constructed) canon and interpretive community consensus, it's harder to separate the story from the other layers of meaning production...]

One thing I like about you is that we disagree :) - in friendly ways. I like intelligent people who disagree with me, can learn much from you. Lots of aspects I understood far better after hearing your point of view.

I have to confess that I have been a fan of Tolkien and the LOTR books since the first time I read them at the age of 14 and fell in love with the book Aragorn. I was very apprehensive about the films before I saw them, fearing that I would turn out to be a book purist, but I do love them and believe that PJ and the writers loved the books and tried to keep faith with Tolkien ( ... )

I have a few more plans for us :) - but as always, it's not sure whether it will work out well and it will be a bit of fight and work.

It's true, Viggo is very interesting as a person, too - I wrote "Sweating" and "Linger" which are both very "intertextual" and couldn't be changed into original slash - just want to say, I see the appeal of this approach, too. I'd also love to learn a bit more about Sean as a person - meanwhile I consider him as the even more private person. Viggo reveals a lot of himself in his art, at least that's what I think. To me it seems he reveals much more than he knows; I also realised that the posts on PP mirror exactly what he reads, which music he hears etc. It's very interesting - and I must admit the temptation to think 'I know' some basic truths about him is sometimes high ... the media are very tempting in this regard anyway. Sometimes I listen to his voice with headset and it's like he sits very close and tells me something. In rl, if you hear someone so near, it' an intimate situation.
