I was a fugitive on the run

Nov 20, 2005 11:51

It started at 10:00 p.m. We wore dark, light-weight clothing that we would be able to run, duck, and jump in without getting to hot. The meeting spot was supposed to be in front of REI, but as the time drew closer we were met by someone instructing us to not make ourselves look to obvious. We sort of just started walking around the parking lot pretending to be lost. More and more individuals in hooded sweatshirts, amd running gear approached. I could feel the anticipation rising. As I looked around the group of people, I took note of how few girls there were compared to the number of guys. This was going to be fun.

At 10:25 p.m. the man who talked with us at the beginning stood on top of a car to give us the rules of the game: no running through the woods, campus was off limits, had to stay within 10 ft. of a road, and to try and trespass as little as possible. The goal: get to Boulvevard Park within an hour and a half and TO NOT GET CAUGHT. There were three cars full of people trying to "capture"--really tag us the "fugitives".

I think my group may have broken almost all of the rules, but it was so cool. I really did begin to start feeling like a fugitive as we ran across farmland, through construction sites, through people's yards, walked painfully through thorn bushes, fell on the ground, walked through 4 inches of mud. It was of course my idea to participate in this event. My suite mate Tiffanee, and my friend David accompanied me. Neither of them really knew where we were going out all, but I had a sense of the direction, and how things were relative to each other. I think we did sort of go in circles at points, but that's ok. None of us really know Bellingham that well, but we still were able to somewhat figure it out.

We knew it was getting to be close, close to the end of the race, close to the destination. We could feel it. Get this though- within a block we saw two people walking towards us. There was a moment of hesitation, and then we decided to turn around and go up an alleyway. THE TWO STARTED RUNNING AFTER US. My heart was in my gut, and I just kept running. Tifanee was caught right away, but Dave and I just kept running. I could sense the guy was gaining on us, but I really thought we would out run him. Didn't happen. I turned to look back. which of course caused me to slow down, and he tagged me. Dave was still running though, but he to was caught. The guy running after us had such LONG legs, but he said "Wow that was good I thought I wouldn't catch you guys"

Not a lot of people made it as close as we did. They said most were picked off at the beginning. I think only one group made it in. We were the second to get that close. It was a totally awesome experience. It's something that I think I'll never forget. (I'll have the scars to prove it-heh) I'm of course planning on playing it every quarter so my stradegy will hopefully become better and better.
