The Right Vocabulary

Preface: The past three weeks I have been enlightening my students onto the art of "cartooning". We have a visiting author who is not only a writer and humorist, but also wrote/drew a cartoon book for kids. So... I have taken a variety of his characters and we drew our own versions of them.

Yesterday I taught my third graders how to create a cartoon alligator. I told them after they completed the drawing they could then turn their alligator into a silly character for example: it could be a ballerina gator, a biker dude gator, a football player, etc. Any questions? Well one of my really space cadet-ish kids raises her hand and asks, "Can we add condiments to our alligators?"....

There was then a moment of dead silence from myself and the rest of the class as we ponder what the hell she is talking about.

"You want to draw things like ketchup and salt on your alligator?" I ask seriously.

"No, things like hats and shirts...you know condiments.."... she replies.

Then at that moment, the little boy who always tells me what 'fabulous' clothing I'm wearing pipes up with, "Do you mean accessories?"...

"Yes, accessories... hats and things..."

"Yes, you can draw hats, hair, and other 'accessories'... phew"

I can always count on my little fashionista boy student to know the right fashion termonology to solve a problem
